    Rant.
    Summers here down under.

I'm sitting in a streetside cafe waiting for my lunch.
Lady pulls up in a car space right in front of the cafe.
I see she's talking on the phone, considerate of her to stop driving while doing so.
But she leaves the engine running, this went on for my 30 min lunch, I left and she was still there.

Mums at my kids school get to school pickup spots early and sit in parked car, engine running.

I know it's a comfort thing to have the aircon running but jeesh,
Would they do this if fuel was more expensive?

People would certainly drive less if gasoline was $50 per gallon.

I see this type of stuff too. Watch the TV in the USA and everybody starts caring about the environment when gas hits around 4 bucks a gallon. You start seeing electric cars all over the place and on shows and in the news. I'm glad gas has been cheaper and I can understand someone leaving the engine running when it's hot out for AC.

Its just around here it seems people buy cars based on how large they are and how much gas they guzzle as opposed to something that suits their needs and burns as little fuel as possible.

She sits there, engine running, air con going flat out, she is not thinking "i am using up fuel that I am going to have to pay for later" she is thinking "I have to chat and I am going to keep cool while I am doing so". Some people think ahead, others just operate in the moment. It's the old adage: You cannot teach common sense, you are either born with it or you are not. I bet though that it's her hubby who fills the fuel tank and shells out the dollars, not her.

Just came to me: Remember the old days when the only air con in a car was the window winder.?

I don't get this modern trend to keep the engine going when the car is parked. I guess this is because if I did this with some of my first cars the engine would overheat and blow a gasket.

Car idling with aircon would use about 1.5-2.0L of petrol per hour.

So her 30 minute conversation in cool comfort would have cost her about a buck fifty - which is probably much less than the actual conversation cost her on her mobile bill.

Then again, she was probably tapping the cafe's WiFi so she was actually saving money.

But yeah, she can probably afford the buck fifty. How much was your lunch? I just don't get why people don't make their lunch at home! Bet they wouldn't do that if wheat was more expensive! :D

I'm glad petro doesn't cost more because the poor benefit the most.

Entitlement. It's the same mentality that allows people to get fat from processed foods, sodas and the like. Carbon emissions? Diminution of finite resources? Most people don't care. Not saying it SHOULD be that way, this is what seems to prevail.

Or the other side of the coin. The idiots who start their cars a half hour before they leave in the winter. It would be just awful if they had to be cold for 2 minutes.

It would serve her right to have her car stolen.

Perhaps she chooses to burn gas to stay cool, then drive home to make her own lunch. You get to spend your money the way you choose, don't you?

Personally, while I understand it is not pleasant to try to eat a nice alfresco lunch with petrochemical fumes swirling around, this unpleasantness can be avoided by choosing alfresco eating locations that have better views than a car park.

so, like does everybody switch off their engines at a long stop light or in stop and go traffic? Of course, engines starting and stopping certainly wouldn't belch out more gunk than a warm engine that has settled down into normal mode on the ECM, would it?
