Yes. Frito Pie is Fritos, chili and cheese. Nachos are tortilla chips, cheese and jalapeños. There are more dressed up recipes for both, but those are the basics of each.

The Fritos with real chili make all the difference! Of course, you need good beef chili!

I ate Fritos when I was a kid -- the Frito Bandito and all that. Do they really still make them?

It is acceptable to just toss the grated cheese on top of the hot chili on frito pie, whereas the nachos have the cheese purpose-melted on top, perhaps via broiler.

And oh yeah--Fritos, the real curved ones only in Frito pie.

Don't ever ask that question if you head south... one of a few unofficial state dishes in NM. It'd be a bit like asking whether you should put pintos or kidneys in your chili in Texas. ;)

Maybe they're more rare in Canuckistan. I''ll check the snack aisle the next time I'm in a grocery store. I think tortilla chips won the war, however.

I realize an opinion.....but the BASIC recipe for Frito Pie is chili and diced onions, poured into an opened bag of "regular" (small) Fritos. yes, you can eat them in a bowl, and cheese can be added, but those are "modifications. Proper Nachos are tortilla chips with refried beans and cheese, with jalapenos on top. Pico de gallo or salsa is optional. Nachos of just chips and cheese (with peppers) are a sports venue invention. Cheesy way (pun acknowledged) to make something cheap and easy and call it by the wrong name. ;)

In my opinion only Frito (like them) Pie is a bit soggy but Nachos don't have to be totally. Salt content on the Fritos is high......waaaaaa I still like them but seldom eat them any more.

Let me just say that to be authentic, Nachos must have REAL cheese! None of that cheese sauce imposter. Tortilla chips with cheese sauce are NOT nachos.

We just ate my wife's ( like 10 layer) amazing leftover lasagna for dinner tonight.
Imagine 2 slices, each the size of a Rat ll pedal on a plate.

Even our bottomless pit yellow lab is full! That takes work!

I thought I would use a metric many of us here could relate to.

My wife really is a fantastic 'comfort food' cook.
Two of her chicken enchiladas, placed end to end, are the length of a Twin Reverb reverb tank, in the bag!

Frito Pie? People do that? As a transplanted transplant son of Arizona, I am offended by the very idea.

What's next - Boo Berry Cereal muffins?
Add lettuce, burger seasoned with Southwestern spices, and perhaps some green peppers and onions.
