There's a 'do' going on at work today and there's a free barbeque going on. Only burgers and hotdogs, but it's free and I can't stop. I've had 4 so far and there's just been a tannoy saying that there's a whole load more going on that needs eating! There are a hundred or so of us here and even after everyone has had something there's enough for several more rounds.

It's my duty to continue... Even if I regret it later.

Time to teach about the difference between grilling and barbecuing. And the Brits claim they invented the language!

Up north here, a grill is called a barbacue, and cooking stuff on it is called barbecuing. An event where stuff is cooked outside is called a barbecue. The food that is cooked on it shouldn't be, and usually isn't, but sometimes is, called barbecue.

It's all wrong, but it's just how it is up here. The only thing I witnessed growing up in Iowa that was honest bbq, was called a "pig roast" instead.

Cargo shorts + plastic baggies = take home some leftovers! :D

I've been invited to some "barbecues" that turned out to be "grilling" cookouts. It can be confusing, but once I see some delicious grilled things I'm not about to be all like, "HEY! YOU LIED! THIS IS NOT BBQ!" If I do get the urge to be pedantic, I just stuff a hamburger in my mouth.

Hamburgers and hotdogs are not barbecue.

Grillings burgers and dogs is a cookout, not a barbecue.

    Re: "Cookout" vs. "Barbecue"

Just for reference, check the motion picture "Giant" (Rock Hudson, James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor).
One of the early scenes features what I'd call a barbecue.

Regardless of what we call it, it's a noble thing you're doing there. May you have the strength you need to continue.

I'd like to think I would do the same, if need be.

Over here we never use the word 'cookout', and I think real BBQ (the type I've seen on Man v Food is my only reference) is normally called a hog roast or something like that. So yeah, anything where you're cooking over hot coal is called a BBQ here.

It certainly can't be compared to a proper 'Murican BBQ, but I'm powering through regardless...

Barbecue, pig roast, pig pickin', cookout -- it's all good.

    Except at work.

Hey, if my workplace wants to feed me I'll let 'em. Bonuses are off the table this year so I'll take what I can get.
