Is a matter of probability…
I forgot how funny Zappa was!!! I love at the beginning of vid he's holding a MIKE singing thru a COLISEUM PA, yet they are holding a boom mike over his head!!! Lol :)
Zappa was so amazing however Muffin Man was nothing like his normal ( if there ever was such a thing for Zappa) music. He was my first guitar hero when I was a kid. His music and his sound have held up well over the years.

I don't think a Rat would get you there.

A neck humbucker through a cranked Marshall-esq valve amp would probably get you close. Is it my imagination or is there a subtle phaser sound on that guitar?

Just great, sloppy only because he was at the edge of trying to synch with his mind.
Good to see a close audience, how concerts used to be.
I go with a wound amp and neck humbucker pick up.
Richard.

Thanks for letting us know about that!

That clip is from the Baby Snakes film, so I'm sure the boom mic is associated with the camera crew.

Not sure how Muffin Man is not "normal" since, as you yourself basically said, what is normal Zappa music?

I have long been fascinated by Frank. I got to see him in the 70's. Pretty heady stuff for a teenager to experience for sure! I blame Frank for sending me down the Rock n Roll path! ;) The solo on Black Napkins is my favorite. I still buy and listen to his works.
I would have loved to see a "Zappa does Zappa" show. Of course you could go insane trying to figure out how FZ did what he did , but I think that's half the fun of remembering him.
Found a picture of Roxy his SG, a pic of the Gibson Roxy replica tone controls, and a little blurb about his backline: He used to play with three amps simultaneously. The signal was sent to one in particular, or to the three amps at the same time, in order to get a concrete tone. Zappa usually worked with Marshall, Acoustic, Carvin and Orange Amplifiers; and very often with Sennheiser 421 mikes. The amps´ outputs were doubled to a bass channel. Using mono and stereo combinations with the different amps, Zappa was able to emphasize very diverse aspects of the sound that came from the pickups; he could get very soft tones (even sweetly clear, as can be heard in the ´88 tour albums) and barbarian overdriven ones -very often a Marshall machine is involved in this last case-.

FenderGyrl: I saw the Mothers a number of times in the 70's, but I wanted to chime in about Zappa Plays Zappa. I have seen Dweezil and this group three times now, and in some ways they are better than Zappa's various lineups. Just recently saw them play 1974 "Roxy and Elsewhere" from start to finish it was mind-blowing. BTW, the Roxy-era version of the Mothers has always been my favorite.

Oh Yeah: Dweezil did "Muffin Man" at two of these shows - God knows what he was playing through to get that tone - His effects "board" is the most massive I've ever seen.

Here's an interview with Frank Zappa where he goes into some detail regarding his setup. It's from almost a year before the 'Muffin Man' clip was filmed (October 1977), so it's likely that several things were changed in the interim, but hopefully it's of interest anyway.

Wow, so many cool posts happening here! This is how my Frank fixes begin ... a simple thing like a thread about him and pow....YouTube searching for complete shows ensues, the vinyl makes an appearance, eventually the Pignose gets dusted off. Pretty soon the old man starts requesting certain songs because he grew up in California LOL.

Rvansickle : I'm gonna have to keep an eye and an ear open for Dweezel!

Fendrguitplayer: Yep= Happy Birthday Frank !

Lupowitz & Czgibson = Great Links !

Here's Frank "whippin" his Strat ( Fender content !), dig the honkin tone !:) I think this is the Strat that he had the mysterious "Green Ringer" EQ screws built into so he could tune the guitar to the Arena for resonance?! Oh Frank! ;)
