Viola Smith on drums
Go cat go!
Now I know where Bob Seeger's drummer got the idea for his "kit". Saw them in 1969 and with some band mate buddies and before they hit the stage we were going "WTF is with the drums?". Same as the clip here, the drummer may have touched them once at the beginning of the song and that was it.
Died on October 21st, aged 107. A wonderful player.
Thanks for posting that, enjoyed it very much! Wonderful stories.
One of those videos was in my YT feed last week. The poster said in the comments that Frances Carrol was a dancer hired to be the front person/ 'conductor ' as Viola couldn't do that and drum. But that it was Viola that put it together and ran it. (Didn't watch the other video... maybe she talks about that.)
Edit: I just had time to watch a few minutes. Get this quote from her father, and how much he made them practice(!):
"We cannot waste children's energies on anything but music."
I ran across a longer verson of this video (3 songs) while reading Viola's obituary. I was telling a friend of mine about it, saying, "The band was really good, Viola was a legit drummer and Frances was smoking hot!" He kind of laughed, finding it hard to believe a woman from 1939 could be considered "hot". I sent him the link and he replied, "WOW! You were right!"
