Same here. After he trashed the guitar, Kirk asked him to sign it, and Prince refused. Total dick move.

Although I don't admire his guitar playing like others do, I do see him as a great musician and song writer and performer. I don't think he was as well rounded as a musician on the guitar as he was on the piano. His piano playing has more depth in terms of theory and diversity and musicality. There was some "attitude" going on (for lack of a better word) that I didn't appreciate, but I am guessing that was just part of the stage face or public face he wore when he was away from home. The only time it really irked me and rubbed me really wrong was in the While My Guitar Gently Weeps clip. But that's another different thread......

It certainly doesn't seem like it's been 4 years, seems like yesterday.....

Prince refused because it was against his religion.

... he did rectify the situation: apologizing and making arrangements to have the Epiphone fixed. It also allowed Douglas to make some gratifying connections with other music giants.
"Well, a lot of good came from that," he told Consequence of Sound. "A lot of artists who I admire reached out to me saying, 'Oh, that was a really ****** thing he did' or saying, 'That guitar, I know exactly where you can get another.' Jackson Browne reached out with a listing of where to find another Epiphone Crestwood. That, to me, was super amazing. Jackson Browne reached out to Elvis Costello, and Elvis Costello passed that information on to me."

He added that he didn't take the toss personally

    Really?!

So you think there's universal appeal for every band and musician? Do you find ALL musicians of equal talented equally exciting?

    I sure don't!

Prince just epitomizes this phenomena to me as I can tell he's a monster on may levels but for some reason doesn't move me in the least. There's others, but none I can so clearly see/hear the paradox.

I don't know man, he got over it because he started out as a huge fan. The fact that Prince had done crap like that to others as well does not show well for the man. I really never find an apology to be as impactful as the act itself and the fact that Prince showed so little care for the man's guitar is not something that an apology later can fully fix in my view.

Look, there are a lot of great artists out there that can play many instruments, great writers, great performers etc. who can certainly match Prince, just depends on if you are a fan of the music as to just how good any of them are. I never warmed to Prince really, even after meeting him for about 30 minutes back in '87. His half-time show performance and the solo with Tom Petty are his high-water marks and the rest was the kind of pop music that never impressed me. He had all the tools, just wrong genre / style of music for me.

ok, now what one person can do all of that stuff to the level Prince did?
Talking songwriting, singing, guitar playing/other instrumentation, and otherworldly performance abilities?

If there is someone as a suitable candidate, I've yet to hear it

Let's see, songwriter, guitar player / other instrumentation, and performance ability? How about Sir Paul and Springsteen come to mind pretty quickly, but there are likely many more.

I hated when Prince wrecked Kirk's guitar -- it rubbed me the wrong way too. On the other hand, as far as drug-addicted, destructive musicians go, I've seen far worse.

The thing about the ATWIAD album is that Prince played everything -- all the instruments (maybe he did that for a lot of his albums, I don't know). Blew my mind in the 80s when I first heard it, and still does. The piano playing and the melodies. Wow.

I am sooooo with you on this. I never understood the "genius" label. When he passed, I listened to his greatest hits. Meh. Haven't listened to single one since.
