Finally found a distortion I really like and it's one of those less popular pedals you rarely hear about...the Boss MD-2 Mega Distortion. I tried it in 2 different stores and just won a new one via ebay for $47 shipped.

It has a ton of gain, but dials down very nicely. A separate bottom end control that lets you dial in just the right amount of low end. It isn't fizzy like many of the Boss dirt options are to my ear. The gain boost control can really give some awesome over the top distortion if you like...quite versatile.

Can't wait to get it.

interesting , I was looking at the expensive walrus audio ironhorse and the one thing I worry about and have now with a tc dark matter distortion is high end fizzyness

Do you like the Dark Matter? I thought the demos I saw were pretty good. I went with this because I really think it is the best Boss distortion. I'm really picky about distortion but for the price I figured, no great loss if I grow out of it quickly or I'm less thrilled than I was in the stores after a week, lol.

yeah thats true , the Dark Matter sounds pretty good overall but I think for what it is it is a bit overpriced and is a little noisy with my Tele and all single coils but it has a good chunk to it when playing through a loud clean amp

The Wampler Sovereign sounds really nice, but it was too pricey for me for just a distortion...had a nice tight feel to it...I had a chance to spend some time with it and if I had money to burn, I'd have one. The Dark Matter sounds good too...I haven't played it but it didn't seem too special.

I think I can coax very similar tones with the MD-2 and some patience.
