I bought a used Boss FZ-5 Fuzz this week and am shocked, amazed, and down right pleased at how great it sounds. I don't recall hearing much about it over the years, so that's why I was surprised at how great it sounds. It flew under the radar, but it shouldn't have.

It gives you three different fuzz tones (fuzz face, Maestro, and Octave fuzz), and all three sound really good. I have spent years futzing around with trying to find the right fuzz box, and spent too much money in the process, and I think I've got it now. Kudos to Boss!

    Question,
Can you get a good strong fuzz effect from the Boss, WITHOUT having to crank the actual pedal Level?

This has been my problem with other fuzzes whose Level has to be way up, for the fuzz to sound right, and for someone like me who plays lower volume gigs ( but still likes to rock)- it's a real deal breaker.
    Am I making sense? Thanks!

    * edit- I'm a huge Boss fan

    Thanks for bringing it up.
Found Andy at PGS demoing it years ago:

    Sounds stellar.

He mentions that it cleans up well with volume knob. What is your experience with this?

    .

This is the "surprisingly good" fuzz I got a while back, Azor 303 (Gray case), $20 via Amazon.

Yes, I think you can. The fuzz knob gives you a boost if you keep turning it clockwise, so you can leave the level control where you want it and still get more fuzz.

Andy is the best! I haven't played around with cleaning it up with the volume knob. I don't tend to use the volume knob on my guitars much except to increase or decrese the sound level.

That's what I'm talking about! Fuzz snobs will give you funny looks, but I say your collection isn't complete until you have one of these.

    Cool, thanks!

As a player of pretty early Classic Rock and blues, I have a good low/moderate OD sounds figured out, don't really have a need for a '70's hard rock/ Marshall tone ( but do have pedals that come close if needed), but a fuzz tone I can dial in that is not much louder than my clean or OD tone, would be a good thing!

I have a FZ-3 and still can’t get on the fuzz thing. Maybe someday I’ll get it...

It's been on my list... in addition to about a dozen other fuzz pedals I want to try. Seems pretty versatile. I wonder if it flies under the radar because 1) It's COSM, so it wouldn't appeal to purists and 2) its design - it doesn't reflect that wacky, irreverent spirit we see in most fuzz pedals.

Yes, could be that the COSM technology turns some people away. And Boss pedals aren't very sexy looking, of course. :):)
