the main problem with these is they are aluminum saddles and to set the proper striing distance you have to loosen the string tension before you adjust the saddle, with full string tention you could strip the the saddle threads , but in reality its just a thing to be aware of rather than a bother .

I built a 400? bass kit from thefretwire. Turned out beautiful, but I still can't play it.

My friend has an '88 midnight blue 4003S. It looked like it was used as a cheese cutting board. It was in bad shape. It wasn't patina, it was gross.

The pickup selector switch wasn't working from gross... It needed extensive cleaning and now it works fine.

New nut and a new bridge pickup plastic bezel piece were sourced from Rickenbacker directly.

Other than that I left all the honest play wear on it, except for a huge gouge on the fretboard.

While I was fixing it all up, I talked him into a new mapleglo one, now he has two!

The vintage knobs look so much better than the metal center piece, in my opinion. They went on the new mapleglo.

very nice work and well done Kudos ...

I bought a 96' american strat I called it my "Blood & guts special " there was soooo much biodiversity on this poor guitar hat it requiered a full teardown of every thing and a solid cleaning . when rebuilt it turned into a fine strat.

I forgot to add, when I refurbished that '88 midnight blue 4003S, he was complaining of bad arthritis. My research led me to the Thomastik Jazz Flat JF344 set.

He loved them so much he wanted me to buy another set to put on his new one

I've never played a Rick bass. But I've played some guitars and would love to do some sort of folk rock thing that might justify a 12 string.

As an aside, I sat next to a guy who had done legal work for Rickenbacker at a concert a few years ago. I think he was in house counsel.

He said they made such good guitars (and I suppose basses) that they made money despite what bad business people they were.

    beautiful .

in the internet documentaion from Rickenbacker about telling a copy from the real thing
Rickenbacker states very clearly that the Ibanez copies were made with outstanding high quality and that the real differences were in the fine details , like the bridge covers on a Ricky the string holes are oval shaped and the Ibanez were round , the body cavities , Rickys were drilled out , Ibanez were carved . just the details but didnot say an unkind word about the craftmenship of the ibanez. HMMM

Funny thing: my two favorites bass player are Paul McCartney and Chris Squire and I am of the age when Geddy Lee was everyone’s bass hero, but I never owned a Rick bass for years and years. I had a Rick 12 string and a 620, but somewhere as a teenager, I tried a Rick bass and just couldn’t get on with it. I played Guild basses, Hofners and a CIJ Fender jazz.

About 10 years ago I saw the movie “Scott Pilgrim VS the World” after a few drinks and right after the movie bought a fireglow 4001 on eBay. It just struck me as preposterous that I didn’t own one. I love it and play it live all the time. Maybe the one I tried when I was 15 wasn’t set up?
