I know Johnny is much loved here on the forum from comments you've posted. Say what you will about dear John, Martin and Co. thought enough of him to give him his own model guitar. $14,999.00 list price. Can't wait to see what GC will list these at, and just think there's always that 15% off!

I won't lie, I'd love to have one, but I'm thinking it might be just a taddy bit out of my price range. This is about a different guitar, but since poor John has receive many a pommelling from the dear readers on the BADDOG, I thought it fitting he should be able to strut his new Martin guitar just a little.

This is NOT John, but nevertheless you can get a taste of what the guitar sounds like.

It would be so cool to have one of John's D-45s I could put it right over there with my SRV Strat, that I don't have. That would be an almost perfect pair of guitars to not have. But I would have, if, well, I dunno that's a lot of geetus.

John Mayer was great on his Dave Chappelle's Show appearance, but I seem to recall he was playing a Strat on that one. No Martin.

I don't picture him as a Martin guy. Then again, at $14,999.00, I won't be one either.

Well, here's the thing. I'd never buy a $15k guitar. Even if I had the money. Even if I were John Mayer's mother. That's just crazy.

But... I don't fault him for having a model named after him that costs $15k. Is it worth it? Not my place to say, as I'll never play one. I know it's not worth it *to me*. But apparently Martin thought it would be worth it to their collectors.

Love him or hate him (he's an oddly polarizing figure...), he is one of the most famous and high profile guitarists in the world. I'm sure Martin isn't just stroking the guy's ego because they wanna get in his pants. They see an opportunity to sell these guitars out. They have people there that they pay a lot of money to. Specifically because those people know a lot more about marketing and sales than I do. I'm sure they're right.

And I'm not gonna lie, if Martin wanted to put my name on a guitar and sell it for $15k, I'd sign that paper so fast it'd make your head spin. How much fun would that be? C'mon. Admit it.

John has done enough to convince Martin that they can sell $15k guitars with his name on them. Martin is in a position to sell $15k guitars with John Mayer's name on them. I say congrats to them both.

Oh come on Jakedog... take a swipe at the guy... it's what all the cool kids are doing.

I have to say, I wasn't a big Mayer fan. His music never bothered me really. I think he's a great guitar player, and a pretty decent pop songwriter and singer. His personality bugged the hell out of me. I was often left with the impression the guy was a first class douche. But...

In recent years he's spent a LOT of time around Bob Weir, and it seems to have had a very positive impact on him. I have to say he seems to have matured quite a bit.

Also, I saw Dead and Co. twice in 2017, and I have to say John-boy KILLED it. He's not just a great guitarist, he's incredible. If anybody had told me ten years ago that John Mayer would not only be in the Dead, but be tearing it up like he was born for it, I'd definitely have called BS. But the proof is in the puddin.

FWIW- this is not his first sig model Martin. His 000 model was hugely popular. Very successful.

I would be curious the demographics of who is investing in the $10,000+ guitar market range.

On rare occasion I have met the rich guy who likes collecting vintage instruments (spending in the 10-20k range)...but new instruments or reissues that top 10k - I have never met a soul who buys them. But obviously someone does!

I wonder if it's some investment broker types who see some some return potential; or pro athletes buying there kids the latest and greatest - or lottery winners not knowing how to spend properly? Heh

You are absolutely correctamundo Mr.Dog, I was fearful of reporting that factoid for fear, it might be too much information for a few pour souls!

I'm telling you what, when Brad Paisley will pitch you some accolades when you're John Mayer and on stage with him, I don't see very much wrong with being John Mayer. Having not one but TWO Martin signature models is pretty damned cool too, I don't care who you are.

Actually at the now defunct Huck Finn festival at the Narrows, outside of Victorville Ca. I met a working musician who had a D-45 he had bought brand new, and he was generous enough to let me play it. Not quite in the range of the JM but if I recall correctly I think the guy told me he paid in the neighborhood of $7,000 for it. It was several years ago, but I know he said he loved it, and I did too just what little I got to play it.

If you know how to play your cards right you can save thousands on one of those. I happened to be the first caller on a craigslist ad and got mine for $1500. It doesn't look exactly like that one but is shaped similar. It has a different spelling of Martin on the headstock...E-s-t-e-b-a-n...

I don't know if the guy was just a sucker or what... but a deals a deal...

I've met quite a few players with Martins in the 2-5k value range. The few with guitars valued over 10k where vintage collectors. I'm still baffled who is reaching for the 15k Mayer Sig. (shrugs)

Lucky for me, I live outside the USA - so I never had to get involved in any controversy about John Mayer. He is not all that heavy on the BBC Radio 4 rotation. I sure did see some posts on this site though!

I was playing in a band, and someone suggested we cover a JM tune. I listened to it ad learned it, and thought it was pretty good. I heard another song or two on the pop radio, and they sounded pretty good too. I recently heard a somg from his latest release, and I really liked it.

So if I cared enough, I would wonder why everyone's got a big stick about him. But I don't. I wonder why anybody wants to stir up the **** about him again, just because some company put out a guitar with his name on it. Bet y'all never did that about Les Paul!
