I traveled twice on international flights with an skb tsa002 case as checked in luggage and they seriously cracked the case both times, so now I have two brand new cracked cases. The guitar survived but the second time I took off the neck and put body and neck with the clothes in the regular bag. It felt much safer than keeping it in its case. I would not trust checking in an acoustic.

With what you're doing, SKB TSA cases as a minimum is what I would be using.

Fly Thai! This has been exactly my experience with them. I have flown with 2 guitars before, but one was a Tele with neck detached, checked in and the other taken on board, where it was stowed in a cupboard for me.

Brought in to gate. They hand walked it to baggage under aircraft.
Went down to large pickup..and they got my code and handed it to me.
    Worked great.
I guess some airlines might hand it back to you at arrival, but, not all.

Since you have some time, would it be possible to ship one or both guitars so you won't have to deal with them on the plane?

Switch to a tele or strat. Unscrew the neck and put the body & neck in your suit case. Also fold up a gig bag and put it in your suitcase. Problem solved. You might even fit the disassembled guitar in a bag that would fit in the overhead storage above your seat.

If you want to save money & not worry about the guitar getting stolen or ruined, buy a Fender Squire Bullet for $149 and add $200 for good pickups & hardware & gig bag. You'll be surprised how good the Bullets play and sound when you put some good pickups in them.

You could be paying up to 2k for that extra seat. Undoing 4 screws and pulling the neck isn't going to cost a dime or destroy the guitar. It also makes carrying the guitar so much easier which is a big deal when considering the other luggage you usually have with you on O/S trips. I don't understand why someone would go to trouble of buying another seat unless it's for a high value acoustic or set neck guitar.

I have said that twice already but it seems people like to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for extra seats or fork out for expensive flight cases which they then have to lug with other bags etc. Strange choices when cost was a concern in the OP's post.

Thanks! I'll be there until August next year, give me a ping after January and I'll show you around.

Based on all the responses, I think I'll just take the Casino and borrow an acoustic from a friend. Th acoustic is just not worth the hassle.

Dubai? I’m there with the family for New Year and return on the 4th January.

Let’s get together and tell me if the plan worked.

Just use a lightweight gig bag strapped on your back, that way it wont interfere with flapping your arms... (thanks, I'll be here all week...)

Hey, just an update. I followed all of Peter's advice and both guitars are safe and sound. Thanks!
