The original new wave band got together for this new wav video. The lead guitarist is using a delay pedal with a strat guitar. How does he get the overdrive intensity? Is it a phaser too?

Are you conflating whooshing synth part with guitar sound?

How to duplicate the sustain intensity at 3:53-3:55 I see in the video footnotes -- that he has a Roland RC-120 amp, RAT distortion pedal, Roland RE-501 chorus, and echo tape delay.

The synth part that is flanged or phased runs through the whole solo. Are you talking about the last guitar note of the solo or the stabbed A triad that follows? Either way I think you’re hearing the distorted and modulated synth line.

I read the footnotes on the video, right after 3:53. The Roland technologies have a big part in the sound along with a RAT distortion and a tape delay. I've heard some people swear by a RAT. I'm open to any additional methodologies to get this kind of a sound. It's almost humbuckerish -- with more "edge", and it is something unique according to the reviews I've been reading on this band. It's late 70ish new wave.

At 4:01 in the video, the "factoid" on the lower right states that Paul (the guitar player) used a Roland JC-120, RAT distortion pedal, and a Roland RE-501 Chorus/Echo pedal.

Their sound reminds me of early U2, except U2 didn't have a keyboard/synth player.

indeed, I'm glad these guys did the vid, so it won't be a "lost art". It was cutting edge in it's day. Kudos to the band for making simplicity so effective. I really liked that about new wave and punk like Devo in 1980. I see Flock of Seagulls came before them.

That was an awesome video.. so cool to see the whole thing that way from the original band.

My takeaways having never thought much about the song:
    - All the parts are so minimal & simple and yet work really well, especially "not too many notes due to heavy effects"
    - It's all brilliantly arranged so it all works together

It'd be super cool to see more famous bands do videos like this.

and I like a Picasso better than a Timberlake. Both are good. Timberlake is so elaborate with detail, whereas Picasso uses a concept to do the work. Timberlake is more relaxing and PIcasso is more inspiring IMHO.

Cool video! I love learning about what went on behind the scenes when making famous recordings. The original poster made a comment about the simplicity of the song. I agree, and the guitar solo is the perfect example of playing within the song. It embellishes just a little but still stays within the context of the song and has hints of the vocal melody in it. It's also a very memorable solo. It's been a few years since I've heard this song and I remember every single that he played.

Rumour has it that it escaped through an open window in the late 80s and was never seen again. Thankfully.
