Well they certainly aren’t in the North. I live in Cumbria, which really is north west England unlike those pretenders in Manchester or Liverpool, which are a three hour drive south...

Store bought. Supermarkets round here sell it in half litre or five litre bottles.

I'm going to be dragged for this, but white vinegar is where it's at.

From down here anything above a line drawn from the Thames Estuary to the Bristol Channel is the North.

So that means that the Midlands dont actually exist and anyone you meet from Birmingham is a figment of a deranged hallucination bought on by a dodgy chip. With Vinegar:)

"The North" is the old kingdom of Northumbria. Anywhere north of the Humber.

Is there something wrong with the colour settings on your camera. Do check with @Mjark post No 75 for the proper colour for batter.

Don't they produce some fancy "sea salt" in Malden?

Sadly the beer bottle has disappeared from chip shop counters.

Sadly seaside fish and chips are generally inferior and more expensive, which is not what you would expect given the proximity to the ports.

They were not great when I lived in Scarborough back in the late 70's. Tea time interval at the moment, but should be able to listen on the Beeb again soo.

My great aunt had a static caravan in Saltwick Bay. Me and our kid would be left their for much of the summer. Don't remeber the local fish and chips being much good. Seem to recall living on winkles and mussels we collected ourselves.

You will need to revisit the UK, having lived in London and spent time in East Dulwich I can confirm that the fish & chipps are distinctly superior up north.

    Quite right

    I'm lost for words

I was in the Shambles back in January just before lockdown, it has changed a lot since 99. There are good chippies to be had in York, but not London, especially for a van.

I don't think that they lower themselves to have chips in Harrogate, french fries perhaps. Moules Frites is they are slumming.

Do they have roads north of Bury, is that why it takes so long?

Sorry did you not realise that this is the Fish n Chips thread, not cleaning your stinless steel sink unit

    That will do for me!

I'm in the "both" category. Both on the fish, just the vinegar on the chips.

This! Battered fish gets MV. Unbattered gets lemon. I like worcestershire sauce on some things, but would hesitate a little on fish & chips.

Oh and fries definitely get MV too if it's around.

I prefer tartar sauce on the fish, ketchup on the chips. On my Danelectro Fish & Chips, I don't put anything as it would really mess up the pedal.

When I went from the UK to Australia, the quality of the fish and chips I had went way up. Barramundi for the win! YMMV

EDIT: my wife was born in London and insists on malt vinegar. I'm going to suggest lime, as a step up from lemon.

Have Whitby, Scarborough and your other northern English seaside towns moved south? :)

Long ago I swam in the sea they are not in the South. No amount of global warming will ever change that.

The quayside in my little town is the home for several Thames sailing barges. I imagine them talking to each other when I can hear the stays clanking in the rigging.

Haven’t that Sheffield lot got some affliction with having Henderson’s relish on their chips... A Worcestershire Sauce knock off?
