I wonder why he went to PRS for such a guitar and not G&L or Suhr. 2 well known companies making high end S style guitars, already..

I would assume that PRS has a larger budget, and probably weighed the opportunity when things started falling apart with Fender.

I really like it. 7.25 radius and smaller fret wire are right up my ally. I don't know if I'll buy one but I would love to try one.

My first thought when I saw this guitar, “Hmm, ok it’s a strat body with a PRS neck.”

My second thought, “The build quality is probably phenomenal.”

I wish it could’ve been a bit more daring, like the PRS Santana, but it doesn’t bother me all that much.
It doesn’t really excite me all that much either.

The d-baggery of it enters when rather than just going to another maker of existing quality S-types (as pointed out above: G&L, Suhr, etc.) and forming a relationship with them, one seeks out a situation wherein "their model" can be extra special and "all their own". But it's not, because all the key features have simply been hijacked from the last company they were associated with. Hubris.

Some have oversimplified things here and expressed incredulity at the negative reactions since he is an accomplished artist. Note well, that I am a fan, can and do like his work; but that fandom is completely separate from this issue. I can chew gum and walk at the same time.

Something about a "New" gray Strat that just doesn't knock my socks off.

One of the finest guitars I’ve ever played is a PRS bolt on neck CE 22. Kinda like a big Apple strat on steroids. No weaknesses just incredible. So I am not a PRS hater tho I admit when someone shows up on stage around here with a Santana or a McCarty I’m expecting serious musicianship.

I like John Mayer a lot too.

This silver star however is way uncool IMHO.

Very disappointing that PRS and Mayer felt a need to do this.

    Just slimey....

LOL:p It took 2 years to reverse that "Astro Boy" headstock and justify copying a Strat:twisted:? I used to think PRS was a progressive, NEW IDEAS guitar manufacturer. Boy, I am disappointed:(:(:(.

He was already working with PRS on that "Super Eagle" guitar he was playing with the Dead & Company tours; I suppose he got comfortable with working with Paul so we wind up with this. One of the numerous threads on this guitar across the gear communities mentioned that they started working with him for a custom version of their DC3 guitar and it morphed into what they released as the Silver Sky. Here's a photo of the DC3 - which had PRS proprietary single coils (same as what was on the 305 and 513 models) and a 25.25" scale (in-between normal Fender and normal PRS scales):

PRS had a version with their "Narrowfield" mini-humbuckers called the "NF3". They recently had a modified version of this design out as their Brent Mason Signature guitar:

I have a Strat and love it. I have a PRS and love it. I like JM playing.

But that guitar just looks wrong to me.

I wonder if PRS was able to make a Strat without having to use a neck shim?;)

What would it have taken to make this a set neck? That would put some space between it and a Strat.

Not a fan of PRS or JM. But just not my things, all respect for both of them. But I think it’s hilarious that people think that The Fender of today is any more “Fender” than PRS is. It’s a different company with different people with different factories, with a different mission, that just happens to have the same name. Someone could literally build a partscaster in their garage made with parts that are all non-fender and make a guitar that is closer to what a classic Fender is than The Fender company does today. It’s a huge corporation, people. It’s just a thing. With that said, I honestly think the JM PRS thing is dumb regardless. But both the Telecaster and Strat, as well as LP, SG, etc body shapes should just be considered in the public domain at this point. And before someone says that’s not fair to Fender, the actual fender company died a long time ago, to me. Especially when I remember all the great independent guitar shops closed their doors because of their greed and back door deals with Guitar Center.

Honestly yourself, I did a lot of editing, and it's possible the post came across as stating facts, when I was merely presenting a possible scenario. Sometimes I feel like I might be better off hiring my lawyer to do my posting here.

"Things fell apart with fender", what utter bollocks.
John had enough single coil bolts to get thru two life times already.
    Hes just a lobbiest now.
