picking things back up, summer got in the way. working on thick-nessing the body blank and collecting some tools. just got a 12" craftsman bandsaw for 60 bucks, that should go to good use.

that piece of maple got too thin to quick, so its going to become the fretboard. working on a piece of walnut for the neck.

Make templates. I learned the hard way how easy they make routing and accuracy.

I just finished my first build a couple days ago. Take it easy and you'll do great!

I have master templates, need to make some working templates.

5/8 is too thin for a neck blank right? That piece of maple is 5/8, can I compensate with the fingerboard?

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure the neck black should be at least 1"thick.

Haven't made one yet but 5/8"seems thin.

I think 5/8" neck + a 1/4" fretboard would be fine. Just adjust your neck pocket depth if needed. If you're doing a Fender style headstock, I don't know about the thickness needed for that.

How does it relate to the depth/space for truss rod?

The truss rods I use (the "blue" ones you see on ebay) are routed 3/8 deep. You'd have 1/4" of material between the back of the neck and the truss rod. And the "standard" profile is .83 or so at its thinnest. You'd have about that much, but it wouldn't taper to the full thickness at the other end. It'd be like a skinny shredder neck.

Standard headstock thickness is about 9/16 so you'd probably be ok there.

An option you might consider is adding some material (like veneers) at the ends of your blank to add thickness where you need it.
