Awesome album, I don't think they could write a bad song if they tried back then.

And something from this decade, they're only just about to release their 3rd album but I doubt it will top their debut.

I considered that, but it's too close to call. "Closer" is at least as good, in my opinion of course. I would say I've played "Closer" more over the years, but don't ask for the percentages :)

Sinead OConnor used all her ideas on the first record and had little to offer after, IMO.

closer isn't a bad record, but it sounds more like a collection of standard fare stuff from other british post punk bands or some german new wave stuff in that era.

unknown pleasures really only sounds like unknown pleasures.

Brilliant first album. I've not been enthralled with his subsequent offerings.

I think the reason this often happens is you have your whole life to work on your first album, and only a few months to work on your second.

The Rolling Stones. Nothing after "England's Newest Hitmakers" rose to the same deeply-rooted genuineness.

The best recording Stevie Wonder ever made was "Fingertips, Part 2," 1963. Not kidding:

Even when I listen back to this, it's not as good as I remember. I came up at this time, saw them 3 times, I think, between their first two records. When I listen, I remember how world changing it seemed to feel at the time. But it doesn't resonate with me that way any longer. They're good songs, but not as amazing as they seemed in '91 or whatever.

Our tastes change, but more importantly, our emotional connection and state of mind about the songs/album does as well.

When I was younger and full of bravado, those songs just fueled the fire of being a free-spirited person. Today it doesn't carry anywhere near the same connotation.

    Pretenders first album.

II and III were brilliant in their own way, diminished from the first. But the first I can listen to all the way through on a road trip and never forget it every single time :)

From the "not a great band, but they gave it a shot" directory...

And yes, "technically" it's an EP, but their first full length only really added 'Neighbour' to the mix of semi-decent songs.

If they'd released this just one year earlier they could have been huge, but "grunge" hit the rest of the world around 91, and they had no chance.
