I thought this might be of interest to some; it is a Fernandes RTE-70, made in September 1985 in the Fuji-Gen Factory in Matsumoto (where Fender also used to make their Japanese models between 1982 and 1996/7).

It is a near period-correct copy of a 1959 Telecaster Custom, featuring a double-bound sunburst body, maple neck with rosewood fretboard (correct 7.25“ radius), and no „skunk“ stripe on the back of the neck. There’s an unbranded Tele neck pickup, and the Bridge is a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail, as I had to replace the original bridge pickup after it died. I’ve also changed the pickguard from white to black. The electronics are the originals, and are all US-spec parts. It also has Kluson-style tuners.

I bought this in late 94/early 95 and have used it frequently since. It feels and plays as good as any other Japanese Fender of the period that I’ve tried, and I don’t think I’ll ever part with it, despite these Japanese Fernandes models seeming to fetch good money when they appear for sale.

    So, pictures:

    Nice!

Older (MIJ) Fernandes guitars are super-high quality all around. There's a reason why they're commanding high prices as resale items.

I have this one in my guitar library:

These lawsuit era Japanese guitars are a equal or better than the guitars they copied
Fernandes guitars are excellent old or modern

The player on the right (Vinny Grosso) is playing a Fernandes. It sounds fantastic, in his hands, and he absolutely loves it.

I’m a Fernandez fan, I don’t own one but every one I’ve played has been great. I do have a wonderful Pbass by Fernandez though.

    Well, isn't THAT just...awesome!!!
Definitely one fine guitar ya got there.

I have a serious love affair with Fernandes teles....u know, and i presume by the low availability/increased prices that just about everyone else does too!

    Grrrr...
Nothin' but a buncha' sour grapes here....someone just hadda let the cat outta the bag, didnt they?!?

Also, It seems the Tele style regularly commands a significant premium over the company's otherwise identical Strat style models.

I had the lawsuit Fernandes Strat. I installed some Lindy Frailins in it and that guitar sang.

    Nice guitar

I had a similar Fernandes Tele Custom. As I recall the body was two full width but not thick planks sandwiched together.

A couple of 90s “The Revival” strats I owned along the way were beautifully built instruments. One had a very pretty birdseye maple neck.

The son of a friend purchased a 90s Fernandes sunburst Les Paul. That guitar was simply wonderful at a fraction of the price of a Gibson at the time.
