Would you consider this normal? I dinged my Baja and the ding revealed that the finish was not attached to the guitar at all! Beautiful 2 piece ash body underneath, but this can't be the way this finish was intended to be?

    Fender:
    Hello,

For a thinner poly finish like those used on a transparent finish, they can from time to time be more like a shell. It is kind of difficult to tell for certain now that is all removed.

    Regards-

Pics in case anyone isn't aware of the original issue....

Get a pick punch and make pickles (Well, I meant picks, but you know autocorrect) out of the bigger flakes.

"Thin"? The real question is, what does fender consider "Thick"?

Glue the poly pieces back together and you'd have a second guitar. Maybe they'll let you return it for store credit.

That finish almost looks good enough to melt in a double boiler and pour over ice cream...

    EXACTLY my thought.

Glue the pieces together and you'll have a nice hollow-body. Plastic, of course, but as noted, essentially another guitar.

I'd clean it with a solvent. (to make sure my finish sticks) spray it with shellac or lacquer polish and call it done.

Errm am I missing something? You peeled a finish off with a razor blade and you're surprised? What, exactly were you expecting?
Under the finish is pore filler and sealer. The finish doesn't 'tooth' to the wood at all.

It's not like slipping off your jockey shorts - you couldn't just stretch that off. You had to mechanically remove it.

You could do exactly the same thing to an American Vintage Reissue or a 70's poly finish - people did.

Not sure exactly what your beef is.

Maybe send fender a picture tutorial of you applying a blonde nitro finish. For reference. Incase they forgot how.

Yeah my MIJ Tele did that, and a razor blade shucked the rest of. No stripper would phase it. Like an egg shell.
Your photo of the chips is very familar.

You're a lucky guy. I'm suffering like a damned to take the poly off from a CVC Squier body...

I have a 2005 Clapton Strat I bought new. Same thing, although I haven't chipped it and it looks great. But I changed necks on it recently. When I took the neck off and examined the pocket I was amazed to see that the poly wasn't attached to the body. I'm sure I could have stuck my finger in there and pulled the finish off. I didn't do it though.
