You were bang on about the "original finish" being DIYish. It was a decal that flaked off to touch. The signature is under the finish, however. 20181216_171717.jpg

Just a note to thank you guys for your help.

I've had a few days with the guitar now, I've set it up and it's an absolute beauty.
20181214_212409.jpg 20181214_212353.jpg 20181214_213024.jpg it has a lovely "ring" to it, and it's a really slick player. The neck feels just about unplayed. The pots let it down, there is very little taper, and they are wonky. I will end up upgrading them.

There are no markings in the neck pocket, just a Y50 in the bridge cavity.
The Nancy decal has been applied and finished over, it's subtle but you can see an owner has done that after production.
The mij/cij on the neck heel has been removed, which is a disappointment, and was disguised by the ebay seller.

The "original finish" decal was on top of the finish and was flakey, although the signature is under the finish.

She's a bit of a mystery girl, but that's fine with me. Definitely a keeper.

Looks like a killer guitar. A MIJ from '85 has very little chance of not being a superb instrument. I have a MIJ Strat from '89, a 57 "reissue". It has the same neckplate as yours. It's a tremendous thing. I would not trade it for a custom shop. Congrats, enjoy!

MIJ/CIJ seem to be very well-made instruments.
My avatar is a Custom MIJ, and a CAR CIJ.
I have changed out pots and switch, and pickups on both.
Both are factory Bigsbys, and I added Mastery bridges on both.
    Really, really nice guitars.
I was just saying to my self this evening, I am very fortunate.
