I have a choice to make. I want a good surfin' axe (I already have a US '89 American Strat), and I love surf music. The Strat is great for it , but I want (yet) another fender axe with vibrato and have my sights on one of these.

MIM Classic (I love the price and the bigger radius neck)

MIJ '66 Classic (I love the Sunburst and block inlays)

Don't know if I can wait for the Johnny Marr Sig Model to come out here.

So what are people's views on MIM vs MIJ Jags?

    TIA

If you ask over on surfguitar101, you'll get loads of answers.

Personally, I wouldn't wait for the Johnny Marr version. My opinion only, but it's barely a Jaguar after his mods. I like having the rhythm circuit and the pickup switches. Other opinions may differ.

As for the two models you put forth, I'd be more likely to get the MIM. But then, I don't need block markers...

Those are both great guitars. A friend of mine has a 66 RI and it is a great guitar and sounds as a jag should. I haven't gotten to try a classic player yet, but I've heard MANY good things.

Also you should know, Radius refers to flatness of the fingerboard and is not related to neck thickness. The difference is less than many think. Yes you can feel it, but I don't think it affects playability as much we like to think.

I have been reading about the Johnny Marr Jag today and though I wasn't in the market for one until I read the magazine now its New Year GAS time :p:p but I'll probably settle for a cheaper one, so I'm interested in the replys.

Love a jag. The Johnny Marr model looks fantastic.

My MIJ Jag Special, while hardly a "surf guitar", is a hot contender for #1 guitar in the house. Great build quality. The stock pickups were awful, but I soon took care of that.

    There's a new 50th anniversary Jaguar out.

I have a MIM Classic Player Jazzmaster, and it's the best guitar I've ever owned. I modded the rhythm circuit to create a "strangle" switch that is famous on the Jaguar, so when I flip the "rhythm" circuit, I get a "strangle" switch again. However, it only works on the bridge pickup.

Promagnum, that is a killer sound and makes me want a Peavey 50 4-10" as well!

TFT gypsyseven. Do you know if the the body cavity areas are shielded in the classic player?

Go with the MIM, I own one. I've played CIJs and MIMs and I like MIMs personally because of the bigger neck radius. The 7.25" is too round. Jaguars are perfect for surf music, way easier to palm mute than a strat because the bridge is a lot close to your palm. I can't really say anything bad about the MIM, I know you'll be satisfied for surf rock if you get it.
