Both Allenamps and Griesamps make Champ clones.

The Allen LF has an 8" speaker and there are controls for volume, treble, bass, and raw. Raw, as I understand it, dials out the tone controls, so with Raw at zero, it is a blackface/silverface champ, but with Raw full on, it is a tweed champ.

The Gries 5 has a 12" speaker, and has treble, middle and bass tone controls. The Gries Gain control does the same thing as the Allen Raw control and it also has a master volume as well.

I know all this as I have been back and forth between the two web pages (I have been looking at the Allen Chihuahua which is sort of a Champ with Reverb) for about 6 weeks.

You can get Champs all day long that are serviced and ready to go in the $350-400 range. For $500 it better be a Vibro Champ and *super* clean.

Let's put it this way...

By comparison...
  • Mojotone BF Champ kit (not even Vibro Champ) costs more than $500 and its not even built
  • Just a new cabinet+chassis for a Champ costs about $300
  • Gris, Allen and other Champ-derived amps are $800+

That is why there are few clones. They can't compete in price to the real deals, which are selling for less than the cost of parts to make them. Plus clones lose value while the originals have been appreciating fast; most of these prices are averaging $100-150 more than they were just 12-18 months ago....I bought two Champs on eBay for less than $200 (shipped) each in 2014.

When the SF Champ raises to >$800, that's the threshold when you'll see more clones and probably an official RI. That's the price when Tweed Champ clones took off and when Fender started RI amps like the Princeton Reverb.

Agreed, but the trade off is the clones sometimes have 12" speakers and the tone controls that Fender Champs don't have.

If it's got a 12" speaker and different tone controls it's not really a Champ anymore is it?

It's OK with me, I never liked em'.
Too weak to do much with, and they don't "break up" very well either.
Luckily SF Fender amps of all models are still very common.

But....if you like the SF Champ, you don't need to spend extra money on bells and whistles. I've had a few Tweed and a few Tweed mods and realized I didn't like any of them, so I wouldn't use Raw or Gain options. My SF Champs already nail the Keys to the Highway tone

My non-Vibro Champs have cost me as little as $75 amd no more than $175, a great value...that value factor is slowly going out the window...I wouldn't ever pay $500, $600 or more for one. For that, I can certainly buy a more refined amp with more features...but, right now, for $350, still a damn fine deal.

George Harrison like SF Champs so much he stacked them as his touring rig at one time.

How many would you like?

Just remember...just because someone is asking stupid money for something doesn't mean people are buying it.

Hey, like I said, people ask weird prices and they usually don't sell. That's what I found from a quick ebay search. Prices have almost doubled (or even more, in some cases) on Champs in 8-10 years.

Still, until these get to the $800 range, it doesn't make sense for Fender to reissue them.

Love this one:

"Recently professionally inspected by (redacted) in (redacted). Amp was in great shape, but the tubes weren’t staying in properly. So I replaced both tubes with vintage tubes."

So... it was "professionally inspected" but they couldn't bring themselves to touch it, untouched solder joints and all that.

Replacing the tubes won't fix loose sockets. Re- tensioning the sockets is how you fix loose sockets.

We had a VW Golf roll in during one of my stints as a mechanic. It was in for a power steering pump because the power steering pump is vulnerable to road hazard damage on the VR6 Golf. It's a $400 part. I noticed the muffler bracket was mostly rusted through while we were waiting for the power steering pump. I clipped the mig welder ground cable to the intermediate pipe and was just about ready to weld a gusset on the hanger... because I can. The garage owner stopped me.

"We'll take care of that next time." he said.

Shipping cost and the uncertainty of what you get on Ebay make it more expensive. The original poster is from New York and you can find nice champs all day long for 400-500 dollars on craiglist and probably in music stores for that price. On Reverb, silverface are typically running 400-600. I saw a nice silverface champ at guitar center in Chattanooga all checked out and ready to go for asking price of $450.00 I am sure 400 would have bought it.

The New York Metropolitan Area including Long Island, Staten Island and big chunks of Jersey is a Champ hot spot. Everyone lives in apartments. All the neighbors have sensitive ears and keep the cops on speed dial. Champs fetch premium dough there.
