Hi people
New to the forum thanks for having me.
I have a Fender bassbreaker 18/30 wich I have had for a few weeks.I decided to change the tubes ,so I replaced them sovtek el84. They only lasted about 2 hours and then failed.
I believe the amp is cathode biased so you can just replace tubes as you feel but I am a little concerned that these are maybe not right for the amp. I have returned the tubes to the supplier and I am hoping that this will not happen again. I have put the original tubes back in and its working fine. They are the original ones that came with the amp.
Thanks any input would be grateful.

Welcome to the forum.

If you do any research on tubes, the first thing you find out is there is a great, 'they don't make em like they used to', movement. That's why people pay big money for stuff from the 50's.

You may have just been unlucky with the Sovtek's, but most people will agree that of current production tubes, JJ make the best EL84's.

Give them a try, sound much better in my AC10 than the factory ones.

Even matched tubes may operate in a range where they redplate and fail. If your vendor offers graded tubes, ask for a medium current draw.

I am right by saying that there is no biasing adjustment required though?

The 007 as a single ended amp and the 15 as a Voxy amp.I'd say yes. The 18/30 less likely but possibly. You can still get redplating - it seems a few people have experienced it. Fender probably supplies very cold low-draw tubes with it. Also if tubes are going to go bad it's usually in the first hours of operation.

I think Groove Tubes have a grading on the labels on the .base.

Thanks for your replies folks.
I have sent the tubes back to the suppliers. So I will see what they say.

Its been a few weeks on but I have fitted jjs in the amp and it seems to break up pretty early.
Any thoughts on this?
