Any first hand experience/owner comments would be appreciated. Wondering if it's been discontinued since it no longer appears on the Fender website.

Too bad about the discontinuation....very good amp, imho. I guess there weren't enough really serious SRV clones/wanne-bes who could afford to buy the amp that he preferred to play. Those 2X6L6's through a big 15" make nice sounds, imho! The size and weight are great, too.

  • 40W @ 8 ohms or 4 ohms (Tube Mode),
  • 50W @ 8 ohms or 4 ohms (Solid State Mode)

Can someone explain this to me ??

There's a switch on the back of the amp that lets you choose between a SS and a tube rectifier. I assume the SS rectifier is a little more efficient, hence the higher wattage.

I remember about the rectifier switch now, I remember i wanted that amp until I saw the price...

The Late Amp Doctor Cesar Diaz had the amp design this way. In Fact he was working with Fender right up until he passed away.

The amp also did the cascading of channels as well.

Of course the price tag of $2,500.00 might also play into lack of sales and there for Fender discontinued it.

The SS rectifier pumps up the B+ = more wattage. Think Super REverb versus the BF BAssman.....45 watts for the tube rectified SR versus 50 watts for the SS rectified BAssman.

$2500 for a hand-wired clone of a great amp??? The original '64 Vibroverb listed at $339. That is $2320 in 2009 dollars....pretty fair. OF course, the standard of living in the U.S of A. has been steadily falling since 1972, so that $339/1964 = $2320.2009 is out of reach for more folks nowadays, right?
Compared to the $5200 for the Vibroking, I consider $2500 for the '64 Vibroverb CR to be a bargain????

Actually that is the retail price from Humbucker Music that I got it from.

The MSRP is $3,500.00,

But yes the way the economy is right now no one is going to shell out that much money for these amps. Unless they sell used.

YEah, tazz, this 'street price' thing really distorts the situation. Back in the day, there was no 'street price'. IF someone got a discount, they were probably a working pro who knew the store really well. I can't remember a discount until sometime in the '70's when I got to to know a fellow at a retail store really well...after I became a regular customer.
ONE didni't just walk in off of the street and demand a 25-35% discount. LOL There was no leverage point that allowed one to bargain that hard. The first time I got a 20% discount, I fell out.

The price of these appear to be rising in the used market. An auction just recently ended over $2000. And that's used. I feel like I stole mine a few years ago at $900 used, mint including shipping.

Reason; Truthfully - How could FMIC compete with Peavey's Delta Blues in a "side by side" and maintain a straight face with the price they were asking.
Hey I LOVE Fender Amps but the pricing has no basis in reality.
When a Delta with a PC Board sounds undoubtably as good as a "hand wired" at more than three times the price - that's game.

Also, I don't know the reason why, but Fender left out one detail with Diaz mods. I believe SRV's Vibroverbs also had a Bassman output transformer.

There is something to this...
I have a Delta Blues and am real happy with it.
But...you could probably make a Camaro do everything a Porsche could do for a lot less money, but it just wouldn't be the same.
And, the DB has solid state reverb...but an outboard unit takes care of that.
As for the pricing...to pay a skilled American worker to hand wire an amp is, I imagine, a pricey proposition.
It's a pretty good bet though...if you want something close to THAT tone for working-stiff coin, the DB is not a huge compromise.

The drunks in the bar don't know the difference, but a player with ears will. The way to maintain a straight face is to hear the amps side by side. The DB is not a bad amp and provides service at a good price. The SS reverb sucks bigtime...and not in a good way! (;^) Side by side, there is no comparison...the Fender VVCR is in a different league. Whether or not someone wants to pay for that difference is another question, I agree.
SRV's two VV's carried EV SRO's, IIRC. I don't hear JBL sonics in his music.
