I have one of these but almost never wear it. It’s twill but I think felt would be better.

I have a similar one that I wear when it’s rainy. I like it.

They have become a "cliche" ....

Sadly, this is the case. I have a lovely rabbit felt pork pie, but the Faux Blooz Dudes have taken the shine off wearing that. I have a nice Greek fisherman’s cap (brought from Greece by Mrs. German) but old weird dudes (think George RR Martin) have made that a tough sell for an old guy like me.

I like hats and I have a few. Since I moved back to the gulf coast not too many days when the felts are comfortable but the straw is fine.

I was a daily wearer in DC where the weather was more suited.

I will express the opinion that many make the mistake of thinking any hat looks good on them.

Find a good hat shop and take their advice.

Being bald as the proverbial cueball, I need to shield what scalp I have left from solar radiation and rain and snow, so I have a vast collection of headwear. Started out with "gimme caps," the trucker hats with some logo on the front, whether it's a brand of beer, firearms, or sports team. But that got old and there are so many that do that ... I wanted to cover my noggin with style.

Since I live in the grand American high desert, I have a few Western hats, mostly 6x Serratellis and a few Stetsons thrown in. They're stylish for certain occasions and certainly functional, but you can't wear them with sweats and other fashions, so I needed something different to fill the gaps.

Fedoras. Not the "sporty little hats" with the 2-inch brims that old farts walking mouse dogs and jazz types wear, but by God dress hats like my dad used to wear, or what's often referred to today as "outback style." After years of wearing cowboy hats, I knew where to find cool hatbands (braided horsehair, Indian beaded, etc.). Removing the cheesy stock ribbon band and adding one of these takes the hat to a whole new level. But you need to start with the right hat:

Stetson-Dune-Acorn.jpg

Meet the Stetson "Dune" hat from the gun club collection. Light as a summer breeze. Bound edge. Comes in several colors (the one pictured is my favorite). Available from Delmonico Hatters online for $215 delivered and worth every penny. I have one this color (acorn) with a handmade reservation beaded band that gets compliments everywhere I go. I also have the silverbelly with a different beaded band and the black with a braided horsehair. Perfect for any occasion, from a funeral to a night on the town to grocery shopping. Looks good with dress clothes, everyday clothes (maybe not sweats), and exudes cool.

So for the price of another cheesy Chinese Tele copy you need like a hole in your head, you can look like you mean business.

I love them! I wear a wide brim hat everyday to protect my face from the sun, as I've had some stuff removed. I never wear my had inside & absolutely not at the dinner table, per my mother's rules.

Here's the Cowboy Code for hats:

  • Take 'em off in church and in your mother's house.
  • Never leave 'em on a bed (bad luck).
  • Always set 'em down with the crown down.
  • Don't ever touch another man's hat without permission.

Nice try, Big Brother.
I like them on other people. I just end up looking like the "Milady" guy when I wear one. I wear flat caps though and have several. That's the only hat shape that doesn't look stupid on my head.

I'm with Cpb2020 on this. I like them, but any time I try one on I just feel like I look stupid. I'm more of a Carhart ball cap type. But even then I feel like a goof.

Come to think of it, I also feel like a goof without any kind of head covering. So I'm thinking I should go headless.

If you want to wear a hat outdoors, great. Just don't wear one on stage unless it's a western hat and you're a country performer.

They're nothing more foolish looking than an overweight middle-aged white guitar player with a fedora and tommy bahama shirt.
