Being bald as the proverbial cueball, I need to shield what scalp I have left from solar radiation and rain and snow, so I have a vast collection of headwear. Started out with "gimme caps," the trucker hats with some logo on the front, whether it's a brand of beer, firearms, or sports team. But that got old and there are so many that do that ... I wanted to cover my noggin with style.
Since I live in the grand American high desert, I have a few Western hats, mostly 6x Serratellis and a few Stetsons thrown in. They're stylish for certain occasions and certainly functional, but you can't wear them with sweats and other fashions, so I needed something different to fill the gaps.
Fedoras. Not the "sporty little hats" with the 2-inch brims that old farts walking mouse dogs and jazz types wear, but by God dress hats like my dad used to wear, or what's often referred to today as "outback style." After years of wearing cowboy hats, I knew where to find cool hatbands (braided horsehair, Indian beaded, etc.). Removing the cheesy stock ribbon band and adding one of these takes the hat to a whole new level. But you need to start with the right hat:
Meet the Stetson "Dune" hat from the gun club collection. Light as a summer breeze. Bound edge. Comes in several colors (the one pictured is my favorite). Available from Delmonico Hatters online for $215 delivered and worth every penny. I have one this color (acorn) with a handmade reservation beaded band that gets compliments everywhere I go. I also have the silverbelly with a different beaded band and the black with a braided horsehair. Perfect for any occasion, from a funeral to a night on the town to grocery shopping. Looks good with dress clothes, everyday clothes (maybe not sweats), and exudes cool.
So for the price of another cheesy Chinese Tele copy you need like a hole in your head, you can look like you mean business.
