For those that post there - Just wondering what you think about the impending changes.

they are having money problems

and will most likely go to a "pay to post" system soon - you will have to be a paying member to participate. They currently run on donations like this forum does. Quite a bit of talk right now about those who take but don't give. I have a slightly different perspective, but I haven't bothered posting any opinions on the issue - they would be deleted anyway.

things started getting pretty spooky over there a couple years back, lots of word about chris greene banning people for badmouthing him on other forums, and when the flame wars got to their worst i just started ignoring the place altogether. don't miss it, really, though i did learn a lot about amps from the folks there.

These forums take a huge amount of work and $ to support -- I think it's completely reasonable to reach out to the users. I've donated there in the past.

I think part of what makes the FDP contentious is that it is much more than a music-related site -- and not everyone agrees with, or necessarily wants to contribute financially to, the dominant culture that eats up so much bandwidth there. Pages like gearpage.net are at the opposite extreme -- all gear, all the time -- and this place is somewhere in between. Choices, choices.

I've been a Contributing Member over there for quite a while (and will pony up again soon). Doesn't bother me in the least- I enjoy that forum almost as much as this one, and I don't mind paying for the priviledge of using it.

In fact, these two places are almost the only guitar discussion boards I go to. I visit Weber's Tele board occasionally, and one or two others, but seldom participate in them.

I gotta get some more bucks to Paul soon as well...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not opposed to sites soliciting contributions, or even requiring them, if neccesary. I am not certain that FDP will be the same if contributions are "required", however.

I will not be forced to pay to be anyplace, on any page or anywhere on the NET !!

I never go over there because I don't like it even though I have a password and have been a member for a long time.

Why should anyone who has legitimate input and information regarding the subject matter have to pay?

If this page becomes PAY-PER-VIEW color me gone.

Ridiculous and transparent as all get out. A profit based on the backs of all those who made places like the FDP and this one what they are today pay for staying around?????? An investment with no control ?

NOT!!!!

Have a nice day !!

I haven't posted there for ages because of the bad attitude towards us Brits and the general clique feeling, if you're not thier bosom buddy you don't count.
It's been so long since I posted that some swine has stolen my "Telefreak" log on name. I tried logging on about a month ago and it wouldn't let me

I quit posting over there a few months ago myself. Cliquish? Yes, but C.G. seems to want it that way. Contributing members' posts are much less likely to be deleted. Chris also has a reputation for being dictatorial, in my personal experience, I've found this to be at least partially true. But hey, it's his website, he does the work, he can run it as he sees fit. I can choose not to participate.

I don't find that to be accurate, other than the fact that new users (especially those who don't bother to read the FAQ's) may get DOB'd more often simply because they don't take the time to learn the ropes.

As far as required payment to participate, Chris has been very clear for a long time that the FDP is a for-profit organization. He's clearly stated that it's a commercial venture, with business license, tax ID number etc.

There is no reason someone can't charge for "entrance" or for certain levels of participation. Those offended by the idea can simply stay away. If they think their intellectual contributions should allow them free participation...well, dream on.

Many folks seem to feel the internet is the last bastion of "free" entertainment. Oh, well - they'll likely find themselves limited in places to "go" as time goes on.

Let's not forget..

where Chris got his love for Telecasters cultivated even though as time went on, he wanted to expand..

The whole situation is sad however..it is an expensive venture doing something you love for no profit.. :?

It's amusing, to me, that some folks are so willing to take advantage of "free" offerings, often with gluttonous zeal, yet, then get so bent out of shape when asked to make a contribution. Public television, public radio, and websites, such as the FDP and this one, aren't free for everyone. Someone has to pay the bills.
The idea that they're just out there, free of charge; to claim some entitlement to use them, without support, is a pretty curious attitude. Kinda like the music downloading argument - "Why should I have to pay, when it's available for free?".
