FBD (First Bass Day) : Squier 70's Precision

Well, how 'bout this! Just because I could, I decided to buy a bass. Didn't know whether I'd like it at all, so I set the budget at $500 tops. The Squier Precision 70's came in well under that. Ain't she purty?

Here's a funny thing people might relate to. After I tuned her up and plugged her in, I was instantly having a blast and played for about 45 minutes. I've always liked playing guitar on the bottom strings, so the territory felt familiar. BUT THEN, I picked up my guitar and I was completely messed up for a good thirty minutes. It felt so tiny and bizarre I could hardly play! Sort of scared me at first. We'll be okay, I think.

Nice! I find fretting is way easy on a 6-string after playing a bass. Really builds finger strength.

Don’t sweat transition. Bass won’t hurt your guitar playing. It may take a couple days before it’s automatic because the scale and spacing and string tension but by next week you won’t notice when you trade back and forth. Congrats. Looker.

I love P-basses. After owning a few different types over the years I finally figured out a couple of years ago that all I need is the low growl of a P-bass.

You'll get used to transitioning between guitar and bass. At least you didn't get a 5-string - I bought one a long time ago and the low string being a B used to screw me up whenever I switched back to guitar.

I’m of the mind that more instruments only make you better. I played bass first, and when I started seriously studying guitar it made my bass playing much better. i play uke too, and I find the constant size switching is easy after only a short while.

That is the walnut finish. I can't see any joints in the body, which looks a lot like mahogany, though I know it isn't. Really nice grain. Build quality for a $450 instrument seems very good, even excellent. I don't know enough about basses yet to know how they should feel, how hard to hit the strings, etc., but it sounds cool to me.

I currently own two basses.....a recent Chinese-made Hofner Club Bass, and a 1993 Made in Korea Fender Squier P-Bass. The P-Bass is mostly stock.....I changed the wimpy tuners for full-size "elephant"-ear versions, and strung it with flat wounds. Pickups and hardware were just fine as is. After it got a slight "wound" at the bottom of the body, I discovered it's actually a Plywood body......but it sounds great.
Yours sure looks good.
P.S.....I picked up my P-Bass about 20-25 years ago in a pawnshop for $100.

At least for my hand, it feels easier to play guitar after I have played bass.Maybe because the guitar strings then seem to be lighter / thinner.

It took four basses to finally get me started. The nice cranberry Highway 1 didn’t do it… it was an inexpensive purple Squier. I sold it to a guy who meant to play it at church. I truly wish I had it back, and will buy it back if it comes up.
I have fully transitioned to calling myself a bass player (as I feel ranked higher among local bass players than I am, as ranked among local guitar players.)
I traded and bought my current five:
A super black MIM that I love
An MIJ Lyte that I play at home
An Electra that is bionic!
A Guild that is Epic!
A ‘78 P Bass that I have wanted for decades (even as a guitar player!)
I feel we aren’t done acquiring yet…
Again… your bass looks amazing,

I was going to get a Squier P or PJ in what I think is called Race Red...then I was given a nifty little Ibanez as a Christmas gift. I like playing bass, but haven't played much in years, hoping to remedy that lol.

I’m really pleased with it. It seems a little heavier than a northern ash Tele I made, and that one is on the hefty side. But the contouring fits me really well, and the feel overall (I’m chunky) is really comfy. I have no bass amp, am running it through a 50-watt SS amp and twin 12-inch cabinets. So far, so good.

I am.not one for much bling but I love the black block inlays on the aged maple necks.

Wish they made a P in the awesome sunburst of the J, but thats ok.

The more I handle this bass, the more impressed I am by what Squier has delivered. In my humble opinion, it’s a beauty, and has the “bassy sound” I’ve learned to recognize from Fender designs.

Big problem now is that I’ve started looking at the whole Squier catalog. . . .
