I think there can be something special about bands with just two guitars, and no bass - or maybe just guitar and a keyboard. I’d be interested to see pictures or videos of your favourites.
Here’s ‘Thee Oh Sees’ - I guess the second guitarist is handling what would be the bass part but I think that’s one of the things that gives it its particular vibe…

I had the great pleasure of doing two gigs with Frosty!
The first was a western swing band, circa 1990.
Herb Remington was on steel, so there were two masters of their instruments that night.
Second time was about 2006, when I sat in with Lee Ann Atherton’s great band.
I also saw Frosty play with Tex Thomas a number of times, too.
Superlative drummer!
RIP, Frosty, and Lee.

To some extent the bass part is doubled by the kick drum, so if the song is more rhythmic than melodic you can get by without a bass player.

Hound Dog Taylor toured and recorded with a two guitar and drum lineup. He often said, "I can't play **** but I made it sound good." And the John Spencer Blues Explosion followed Mr. Taylor's example.
