Del would be my number five. Amazing across three decades, always doing something interesting (Gorillaz, Deltron 3030, etc).

These Hiero-affiliated guys are gonna be here soon, 30 year anniversary of the record. Del gets a shout-out at the end.

I tell ya, I don't think people understand how good he really is. When "I Wish My Brother George Was Here" was released he was totally playing off that Parliment Funkadelic thing, but it was crazy good. I thought he was great from the get go. After that, he really began to take off on his own and totally developed his own style and vibe. I think he is brilliant personally.

I was a budding 80s metal head when I learned Public Enemy sampled Slayer for "She Watch Channel Zero" & that Kerry King played on Beastie's debut album. That was enough to intrigue me and when Anthrax & PE collabed on "Bring the Noise" it opened the floodgates. I saw them both on their '91 tour together and it was a wild camaraderie to see long hair metal dudes & ball cap wearing baggy pants dudes all watching out for one another and helping each other up in the pit only to knock em down again!

I love how hip hop & metal share some genetic overlap: themes of anger, irreverence & distrust of authority so it's not really a surprise that hip hop's influence could be felt in bands like Faith No More, Rage, Incubus, Deftones, Korn and more. Judgement Night soundtrack anyone?!

There's many a great artists already mentioned and I have a hard time pinning just one down but Mos Def is a definite stand out for me as is Black Thought of the Roots. Killer Mike and El-P have always been strong on their own but damn, Run the Jewels goes hard.

Lastly, I think one of the marks of a great rapper is how well they can freestyle/battle. Love him or hate him, I think Eminem absolutely will slay anyone.

When I have to hurry up the kids to get to school, I usually sing them the chorus to 'strobelight honey' by black sheep

Yeah, not really my thing. I like some Beasties. Some Snoop doesn’t bug me. PE. L’il Wayne for his guitar pyrotechnics. I kid but do find him more musical than most. For modern stuff, Kendrick.

Cheers,
Geoff

I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s, so for me it's Nas, KRS One, Del Tha Funkee Homisapien, Beastie Boys, Digital Underground, Eric B & Rakim.
And since I've lived in SoCal for a while at that time, with mostly Chicano friends, I've also listened to a lot of Lighter Shade If Brown, Kid Frost, and Mellow Man Ace...

What? No love for Slim Shady? :) I admit I don't care for most rap, but there has been some that I liked. I guess. KRS One comes to mind.
I covered my opinion on him. Marshall Mathers LP is when I probably started listening to whole albums, whereas it was just songs off slim shady lp or whatever the first one was (probably off Napster/scour/Kazaa, it was thr way then). The Eminem Show was great.... until everyone was listening to him all the sudden. Everything after I never connected with.

I loved rap in my younger days. I stopped keeping up with it about 20 years ago though. Kanye was new on the scene when I last cared.

I respect the art form. But I don’t even really listen to it these days. Not even the stuff I loved when I was younger.

Public Enemy, NWA, there was kind of a hybrid rap/electronic band in the UK called Pop Will Eat Itself who’s first record I listen to a lot.

A Tribe Called Red are fantastic. They’ve changed their name to The Halluci Nation but I mention their previous name if anyone tries searching their stuff out.
