Not a "hit" but they played this one a lot when I was in college. He was the lead singer.

I always think of Substitute by Clout which was a huge European hit in 1978. Got to number 2 in the UK despite the band being banned from UK television due to the sanctions on South Africa at the time.
They are also a footnote in rock history as the band who recorded Since You've Been Gone after Russ Ballard but before Rainbow.

Oh and Nice Legs Shame About Her Face by The Monks ( members of The Strawbs trying to sell to punk rockers) which probably wouldn't get airplay these days.

Sorry, last one. Jilted John by Jilted John, better known as Gordon is a Moron. Again, not quite sure this once top ten UK hit would get airplay now. John was Graham Fellows who is a well known character comedian ( particularly as John Shuttleworth). If anyone outside the UK and/ or under 50 has any idea what I'm talking about here I salute you!
My friend's band cover this live and it is a massive crowd pleasing sing a long. Shouting mild obscenities never goes out of fashion...

    .

I have often wondered how many of the one hit wonder songs, because they are often so much different than anything else on the album they came from, were given them by the studio they were at "here, do this song because you won't get any airplay without it". Scrape the music database with the right algorithm might turn up some patterns -- and then re-create it!
