Jerry Miller from Moby Grape. Still really great! Or really grape, as the case may be...
What about Randy California ?
Spirit did some good tunes, and he did play with Hendrix didn't he.
Or for an off the wall choice, Tommy Chong, recorded on Motown after all before he became a comedian.
The best guitar player I've ever heard in person. Not much video of him around, but here is one of him noodling around in a music store.
Another of him from a mid 90's McGuffey Lane video. The man can pick!
I used to see him playing all over the Central Valley in his off time from the Buckaroos. He can play anything. Very Versatile!
Malkmus doesn't get the credit he deserves as a guitarist because his singing is so horrible.
Somebody had to say it!
oh, and my picks are
Graham Coxon? Can he count?
That's it for now
Oh, and +1 for Santiago
dunno if he counts but brian setzer... also me
LOVE Martin Barre!
John Perry from the Only Ones... I've loved his playing for ages, know practically nothing about him.
Pat Flynn from New Grass Revival, (and currently of The Guitar Trio w/ James Burton and Doyle Dykes!). One the finest musicians on the planet.
Sean Costello- a true genius and an inspiration that was taken from us far too soon.
Zal Cleminson- true Scots mad man from The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, and Nazereth.
Alvin "Youngblood" Hart-a monster blues guitarist and singer who is a master of both acoustic and electric styles, slide, fingerstyle, blues rock, a commanding vocalist with true stage presence, who can mop the floor with better known fake "sons of the greats". It's a crime that he's not a bigger star.
Corey Harris, Luther Dickinson, Jimbo Mathus, and Audley Freed are all criminally under recognized, as well.
Some great mentions here already. Glad to see cats like Jerry Miller, Phil Manzanera and Martin Barre namechecked.
I'll add Bill "Zoot Horn Rollo" Harkleroad from Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band.
Mac Gayden...Slide player extraordinaire on the early JJ Cale stuff. Member of Barefoot Jerry and Area Code 615. Own band Skyboat. Co-writer of massive hit song "Everlasting Love".
this bloke isn't too bad.. Peter Koppes guitarist(strats) from the Church.... under the milky way, the ebow and all that....
he's teaching guitar to the young kids at the local school and coaching their rock band ... putting it back in.......
This guy has kinda dropped under the radar since his Jethro Tull & Blodwyn Pig days
Nick Curran (solo, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Kim Lenz)
John Christ (early-Danzig)
J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
Nick Drake (solo)
John Platania (Van Morrison)
Good call on Randy California, who was still playing, singing, and looking great right up till his untimely death.
Never discussed period, or never discussed as a guitar player?
Jay Farrar's guitar playing always sounded good to me but never gets talked about.
Regarding the late Eddie Shaver, yep he was fantastic. I count myself fortunate in that I got to see him perform live with his dad some years back, incredible and LOUD player.
