I like the block markers against the ebony on my old Guild, but unfortunately the neck is too skinny. It's too bad because HB-1s sound sublime. The rest of my guitars just have dots which is fine by me.

My partscaster neck is similar to the Vai.
The larger leaves are the markers.

Same idea here, each flower or bud is a marker (this is a composite of 4 separate closeup pix). The neck has side markers, too, which is what I use for reference when I play this guitar.

I do kinda like the Gibson split parallelogram. I have dots, rectangles, trapezoids, nothing. All are fine.

I do like the “segmented” cloud pearl inlays on my 1939 Epiphone Deluxe. The headstock inlay is a thing of beauty as well.

I like dots. I have a guitar with moon inlays, and they are only ok. They are really kinda dark and hard to see.
I generally like smaller inlays.
However, I've got a guitar coming that has bird inlays. We will see how I get along with those!

My Sheraton's bock-with-abalone-triangle inlay, to me, is gorgeous. Add in the vine and flowers in the headstock, and one had a very elegant and ornate statement of the Epiphone decor philosophy.

Here is my (now) gigging Blueridge acoustic ( an OM-28 style)

It has nice fingerboard inlays, but not everyone likes the headstock inlay ( or the pickguard).
