My absolute favorite is the East-German/Czech fairy-tale movie "Three Wishes for Cinderella" (Tri Orisky Pro Popelku) from 1973. The National Norwegian TV (NRK TV) shows it every Christmas Eve, and has done so for almost 40 years.
It shows a very different Cinderella though.

Libuse Safrankova as Cinderella was so pretty, and she later went on to be Czechoslovakia's leading actress.

You may watch the whole movie on YouTube - it's worth it ... It's absolutely beautiful!

Definitely Home Alone 1+2 every year...
Watched Die Hard for the first time this year and it's become my favourite Christmas movie right away...

Scrooged - Bill Murray.

I listened to a podcast recently by one of my favorite tech writers, Andy Ihnatko, in which he spent the entire time talking about how Groundhog Day, while not explicitly a Christmas film, is his favorite "adaptation" of A Christmas Carol ever. . . and I'm inclined to agree. Scrooged is great, too.

I've never heard of A Christmas Story. Who stars in that? What year of release?

How should I know?

Actually, it came out in 1983. The most well-known actor in it is Darren McGavin (Kolchak: The Night Stalker). It's about a little boy who never acted in anything else as far as I know and who wants a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. You can read about it here on Wikipedia. From the Wikiepedia entry: "On December 24, 2007, AOL ranked the film their #1 Christmas movie of all time. IGN ranked the film the top holiday-themed movie of all time."

Shocking, ammirite? ;)

It came out right when I was entering college, the perfect time for me to be disinterested in a family-oriented Christmas film. Supposedly, it has become the It's A Wonderful Life of its time, with unending repeat airings on cable through the 80s and 90s. I'm not opposed to watching it (unlike, say, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which I've also never watched, a small matter of pride ), it's just that I've never gotten around to it.

A Very Brady Christmas. This scene where Sam leaves Alice, is a tear-jerker.
He leaves her a note, written on butcher's paper:

Dear Alice:

I lied to you. I wasn't working nights plucking chickens. I met a younger woman.

At first, we traded meatloaf recipes. Then, one night, she asked me over, to season her rump roast....

I gotta vote A Christmas Story to the top as best all-round X-mas flick.

Personal sentimental faves: Die Hard, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Christmas Vacation, and FUBAR 2.

Die Hard for sure.

I like to watch The Sound Of Music at Christmas even though it's not really a "Christmas" movie. I guess maybe it was on TV at Christmastime a lot when I was a kid. Also Julie Andrews is my secret girlfriend.

Side note: for the past couple years my wife and I have watched "The Warriors" on Christmas Eve. Making our own little tradition there. CAN YOU DIG IT?!?!

There are 3 go to Christmas movies in our house.

3. Love Actually - the wife's favorite

2. Comfort and Joy - The 1984 Bill Forsyth movie. It's the same guy who did Local Hero and Mark Knopfler did the music (the reason I first saw it). It's got the same quirky feel as Local hero. Unfortunately you can't find it anymore. We have a really crappy VHS transferred to DVD.

1. The Ref - Kevin Spacey, Judy Davis and Dennis Leary. This movie is hilarious. "Your wife ain't dead lady, he's hiding!"
