Just got done with Bad Santa. I was disappointed last night. AMC advertised Miracle on 34th Street and it was the modern version. I really like the original with Natalie Wood. Haven't seen it yet this year. Also like the Tim Allen Santa movies. We watch Disney Mickey Mouse Christmas cartoons also from way back. Traditional stuff rules here.

Just saw the Polar Express in 3D last night. That was pretty amazing.
Around here we like Love Actually. Not a holliday movie per se, but it fits with the spirit of the season.

My main two are It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol.

Of the latter, I didn't care for the 1938 version w/ Reginald Owen. The acting and the screenplay weren't very good.

It's been a long time since I've seen the 1951 version (released as Scrooge in the UK) w/ Alistair Sim, but IIRC, the screenplay departs from Dickens in some particulars. But the acting is better than the 1938 one.

I've seen the one w/ Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek: Next Generation & Conspiracy Theory fame), saw it again just the other night, in fact, and the acting is good but the particulars of the story are mixed for me.

My favorite version remains the 1984 version starring George C. Scott as Scrooge. Despite being overweight (not at all like Dickens' Scrooge), he was the most convincing Scrooge I've seen. Superb acting. And a great supporting cast, also superb actors themselves: Roger Rees as Fred Hollywell, Scrooge's nephew; David Warner as Bob Cratchit; Susannah York as Mrs. Cratchit; etc.

Another favorite is Silent Night, starring Linda Hamilton (2002). Based on a true story related in an interview by Fritz Vincken. Good acting, marvelous story.

Seems like I like the Martians on Christmas:

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
The Christmas Martian (got a VHS this year, and been waiting to watch it).

However, Santa And The Ice Cream Bunny is the only movie I've shown that had the house guests threatening to leave.

Used to love playing fugue with It's A Wonderful Life. It'd be on tree-four stations at the same time, and I'd just flip back and forth. Odd, I know.

Love all the 60's animated Christmas stuff. They used to give out TV schedules of the specials in elementary school. Just try that now.

Hope it's not too heretical, but I think White Christmas is awful. But even a cynical soul such as mine looks forward to being seduced by It's a Wonderful Life on an annual basis.

Oh, and a confession: I've never watched A Christmas Story.

Every year we watch National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and Elf. Both still crack me up.

CC

We watched Elf last night, and my wife is watching Christmas Vacation in bed beside me as I write this. While its a great movie, I'm gonna put down my iPod in a minute and do my best to distract her. ;)

It's a Wonderful Life, of course. Though, honestly, we haven't watched it for a few years - need to put it on this year.

Yeah, the first 2 Tim Allen Santa Claus movies are good, but I can watch Christmas with the Kranks probably every year. The botox and tanning bed scenes are worth the price of admission.

Last year I saw the animated Disney version of Dickens' Christmas Carol, with Jim Carey doing the Scrooge voice (and no doubt inspiring the animators) - somehow missed it until now. It's a good version - maybe not classic, but a nice change.

Just watched National Lampoon movie - it's not my favorite, but works it's way in every couple of years. Elf is never on my list of "must watch" movies.

Actually, you all should check out Arthur Christmas. We saw it last year in the theater and it was fantastic. The story is great. A perfect mix of comedy , sentiment and adventure. It has a great cast, and the annimation is truely amazing. I got it on blu-ray and we've watched it twice this xmass season.

I've actually never seen White Christmas. I can take or leave Bing Crosby (mostly leave), but I really get a kick out of Danny Kaye. The wife and I were talking about watching it this season (she hasn't seen it either), but we're leaving tomorrow to have Christmas with our oldest daughter and her family, so probably not this year.

I've never heard of A Christmas Story. Who stars in that? What year of release?

We haven't seen It's a Wonderful Life this season yet. And probably won't this year, for the same reason stated above.

Saw the Disney's A Christmas Carol (Jim Carey) a couple of nights ago. I agree with your assessment: "a good version - maybe not classic, but a nice change."

When I was a kid I loved Laurel and Hardy's Babes in Toyland. Kind of dated now, but I sure waited for it to come on back then. Kids loved A Christmas Story and Family Christmas.
