Heavily franchise dependent, I think. Or maybe the Hardees merger. The ones up by us in 1990s-era Merced, and later Fairfield/Vacaville were beyond gross.

BP, do you remember the Wigwam burger place? That used to be a destination for me when I traveled the central valley.

Tried to amend my carnivorous habit
    Made it nearly 70 days
Losing weight without speed, eating sunflower seeds
Drinking lots of carrot juice and soaking up rays
But at night I'd have these wonderful dreams
    Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zucchini fettucini or bulgur wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat

The Wigwam was in Merced right on 99. It was like three giant teepees made of smooth stucco. the hamburgers were called the chief, papoose, etc.. it would all get cancelled now, but, man, we loved stopping there... the burgers were wrapped up in wax paper, super greasy and just amazing... my brother's gf (now wife) lived in Rancho Cordova and I'd drive up with him to see her from socal, we preferred 99 and stopping at the wigwam was our favorite part.

I don't know when it closed... but it was americana...

Yeah, maybe I missed it? I was there from 8/90-2/94 or so. Google found me the below, but I have no memory of it (faulty synapses are probably the culprit).

I have not been in a fast food joint in a year - I avoid them like the plague .

I think they added the teepees later... oh man, I looked at the link and I found pics of the branding iron... I've eaten there and enjoyed it...

When I was a kid, my mom worked at the phone company and she told us that if you got in trouble, they transferred you to Merced. She used to have to go down to 'the M's', as she called them and train people. It sounded exotic to me at the time... That was back when all the medians on 99 had ice plant and oleanders...

Since the lockdown occurred and I've been working from home, I've almost eliminated my fast food meals. Doing so ... I think ... has contributed to the 19 lbs I've gained over the year. My home cooked meals are more calories than the fast food meals I had picked out over the years of my life style eating change. I had several fast food meals recommended from health articles that all has excellent protein and were under 500 calories. They were easy and consistent. I kinda miss em, but am getting my home meals adjusted ... it is just taking a while.

    Exception to the rule.
Regarding Carl's Jr, if they're so devoted to cleanliness, why does anything fried always tastes like the oil's been in the fryer too long? They've been on my "will not go" list for along time because of that, that's one place that's consistently disappointing.

4 cents for a slice of cheese!

    5e3af4f35bc79c53c13315d8.jpeg

at 20 cents a shake, there is no way they could afford the service contract on "the machine."

Have you ever seen them pour the "ingredients" into the machine? It will make a believer out of you!

As I sit here finishing off a Burrito Supreme...

The BK nearest me appears to be on its last legs. The last couple of visits, there was only a single car in the parking lot...and that was for the poor soul inside who was running the joint by herself. I finally decided I didn't need BK anymore, so I haven't been back in months.

The new Taco Bell in town is a marvel of efficiency. Back in Alabama, I was used to there being a 20min wait in line at the drive thru...but here, I am more often only third in line and quickly thru. As this is a tourist town, there are no few restaurants, drive thru or sit down. Due to the current situation, most of the sit down places are offering "pick up"...and many have gotten it down better than they were when you had to go in. Our favorite pancake house "Hot Stacks" has a good online menu and they have their time estimator down to the minute. I've done it a couple times and the food is generally just coming out of the kitchen as I walk in the door. Dammit, they have awesome pancakes.

In high school, we got mcd's shakes and while eating fries, my friend, Mark, said, "this shake tastes like grandma made it" and my friend 'The Hawk' replied, 'You mean it tastes like it was made from grandmas'...

I havent had a shake in a long time.

Drove by a Wendy's the other day and they had a sign:

    Real Food
    Real People

I don't think they thought that one through.

Used to you paid extra for cheese. Now days many places the cheese is included and it costs the same even if you ask for no cheese.

But I've found asking for no cheese seems to be fresher burger, maybe because they can't use from the pre-prepared pile.
