These damn things are everywhere on places like Facebook, and people generally swallow them hook, line, and sinker.

They are almost never truthful in their attribution to the person supposedly quoted in the meme.

This example popped up just a few minutes ago, and I, in my skeptical and often annoying wisdom, immediately 'pee'd in their cornflakes' about it, so to speak, did a two minute search on the saying, and came up with a ton of equally dishonest memes showing all manner of famous(?) people supposedly authoring that line...

Yes, it's probably true, but why is there such rampantly dishonest and misleading associations with these things?

I have nothing at all against Keanu Reeves, and I'm certain that he is capable of uttering some very enlightened notions, and of course, he had absolutely no control over the scallawags that steal his image and put words in his mouth, so he gets 'a pass, on this crap, but what's to gain by creating so much misleading junk like this? is it entertainment by the creators of these things to just dump them into the internet and see how far they can go with them?

Tell your problems to everyone. 80% don't care, but 20% are stupid enough to send money to your GoFundMe page.

Not only did he never say that, but the person who actually said it has obviously never cut down a tree with an axe.

...and sometimes, when the original poster gets caught with the mis-attribution, the response is, "I don't care who said it - don't you agree with it?"

    meh.

It's like what Santa Claus once told me.

Not a misattribution, but a total re-working of the original quote. People on music boards LOOOOVE to post this by Hunter S. Thompson:

“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.”

Problem is, he never wrote that. The original passage, from 1985, is:

“The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason. Which is more or less true. For the most part, they are dirty little animals with huge brains and no pulse.”

I always doubt any meme quote without an actual attribution, like the original Keanu one...it doesn't claim he said it, it's just his picture. And I doubt most of 'em with an attribution, even if I do like 'em.

With regard to the theme of that first meme, I remember reading about Peter Grant meeting Dylan for the first time and introducing himself by saying "I'm Led Zeppelin's manager." Dylan supposedly replied, "I don't come to you with my problems."

Of course that could also be a bogus attribution, and I can't remember my source. Or what I had for breakfast.

I think Santa got to her before the death. At least that’s what Geraldo said on Twitter.

"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down 'happy.' They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life."

Attributed to John Lennon, but there doesn't seem to be any proof he actually said it.
