When I look at Musical Instruments, even if I set the search for a 20 mile radius, I get a crap ton of "Ships to You" ads. Most of them are of the too good to be true variety.
So then I'll try "Local Pickup". That gives me items from all over the USA not just my local area.
Any ides on fixing these issues are is just the way it is?

The short answer is it's just the way it is. I've sold some items on there.
It helps a bit if you clear your recent searches.
C'est la vie.
I've sold a good bit on FB Marketplace but the search thing is freaking annoying. It's especially true where I live as it's a small market so the unwanted ads get in the way of items closer to me.
Oh well - SIGH!

I'm experiencing the same thing. I just screen the items that aren't within my reasonable travel zone. I'm in a rural area, so I set my radius to 60 miles.

For my purposes it's a useful tool. I made two sales on MP in the last three days, so I just take it as it comes, with the ads and other 'features'.

Try keyword searches for specific items or types, instead of suggested (curated?) feeds like Musical Instruments, etc…. That seems to reduce the paid ship to ads, IME. It will also tell the mileage to the seller, which is a bonus.

In addition to the local only option, set the filter to distance: nearest first. You’ll still get sponsored ads, but at least it bumps anything in reasonable driving distance to the top
