Haha no kidding! Typical to get questions that are answered in the description.

I’ve had that happen 90% more than people asking a legit question. I think a lot of people might bump the is this available tab while scrolling, I’ve done it a few times by accident.

That said I just ignore it and wait for the people that have solid questions. I’ve had better luck just trying to see if they wanna swap numbers and just chat on the phone, it’s more personal that way. Those people are the ones that end up buying whatever I have posted.

I got a message like that on Reverb within a minute of publishing a listing the other day. They wanted me to reply to them by email, not through the platform's message system.
Absolutely a scam. They’re phishing for your real email address; then if your ad had a contact phone number they can then do a “reset password” and before you know it your account has been hijacked.

I was giving away a partially running mower. My only rule was you had to send me a photo of a drivers license or a bill showing you live close enough to pick it up. (One guy claimed he was coming from MD to get it...I replied "no, you're not...). One guy sent me his power bill and he got the mower. I ignored everyone else.

Got one of those the other day with an hour of listing, a bit late at night:

"I want to buy this. Send me your phone number" (via messenger, so we already had a solid way to communicate).

So I replied "I can meet you locally tomorrow. Tell me where you are coming from".

"I am local. Send me your phone number".

Bye, Felicia.

That's the actual default response (Hi, is this still available?) that automatically comes up when someone wants to reply to you. Sooo, is it a problem with them not following your guidelines, or is the problem you making your guidelines not match the default Facebook response that most people use for convenience?

I had a funny one where I accidentally hit "send" before I added to the "is this available" comment.
I typically put something like "I am in the area" or "I am local and can come by today" after the "available" part.

I had a guy selling some golf stuff that I hit send too fast. He responds right back, "nice try"
I respond, "sorry, hit send too fast. Is this available and I am local so can meet up quick"
He responds, "no scammers :("
I respond, "No scammer, I am really in town and would love to buy this"
He responds again, "I hate scammers, go bother someone else"
I went back and reread out conversation and realized I had not given him too much information that would prove I was not a scammer.
So I responded with, "Hey, I am indeed local, I can meet you at the parking lot in front of Target, behind the Panera Bread. You know they are adding all of those pick up spots in the parking lot area behind Olive Garden and have all the chain link temporary fences up, so I can meet you on the next row past the pick up spots."
At that point the guy took me serious and responded, "so you are local, yeah I can meet at noon!"

I picked up the item and we were all happy! I just have to remember to not type like a bot!

How 'bout this: When the posting clearly says, in all caps, that I will not respond to "Is this still available?", people make the marginal effort required to actually read the post and respond appropriately. The problem is not me, it's with THEM.

You're kidding - for a free mower you require ID? Just put it on the curb and first come first serve.

We've had a couple of really wonderful experiences where someone who really needs the stuff gets it. We replaced the railing on our deck, and put the old aluminium railing up for free (probably could have got a few bucks for it). The guy that came around had a newly mobile toddler, and he wanted to make a play area for the little tyke off the back of his house. The perfect "second-life" for the stuff. We were happy to give it to him.

Not kidding. I don't live on a heavily trafficked street and I didn't want all the "second served" folks showing up and not being served. When my mom moved, I put a lot of stuff out on the curb and posted a curb alert. We went to lunch. When we got back it looks like vultures had ripped through a carcass. People are animals and free stuff brings out the worst.

The ID was to combat the "I'll take its" that never show up or are 45 miles away.

My brother lives on a busy street in suburban NY. He puts stuff out and it's gone before he can walk back to the house. (So he says).
