Back in the early 80’s my brother and I went to see Allen Hollsworth and Jeff Berlin at a tiny coffee shop in Denver. My ex and my brothers girlfriend insisted on coming. We warned them they wouldn’t like it but they came. We left after the first set. The music was incredible but my ex said it was the worst evening of her life and my bros girl friend just went outside and smoked cigarettes. After that show anything with musical pyrotechnics was “boy music” and they knew not to come.

"Intrasexual competition?" Not that there's anything wrong with that.

The author is only doing this because he's a metalhead that also happens to have a degree, its not to be taken too seriously. I think his premise is all wrong that musicians become musicians to get chicks, though. Big hair bands etc. sure, but shoegazers, jazzers, classical musicians etc etc etc: no. This guy might not believe it, but some musicians actually become musicians because - gasp - they love music.
I absolutely did it to get girls. And it worked, too. I started playing and singing fairly seriously at around 12. I did my first gig at 14. I have never had a single romantic relationship that did not start because of my playing and/or singing. Not one. Whether they lasted a few hours or significantly longer, they all started there. Including the one I’ve been in with my wife for the last 27.5 years.

When and where I grew up, you played football or you were invisible. I found a very successful workaround for that problem. And yes, I absolutely love music and would have done it my whole life whether my plan worked or not. But I definitely had a plan, and it definitely succeeded.

I still consider figuring out I could parlay my love of music, and natural aptitude for it, into the acquisition of affectionate attentions from ladies who were otherwise completely out of my league, one of my greatest accomplishments.

So, there really are two types of musician/singer/performers. Those that do it for accomplishment, and those that do it to be more attractive and valued by the other sex.

I was referring to be able to speculate, analyze, and publish a full article to re-iterate what we all ready know LOL

As @Jakedog stated the girls will happen they all want the bad boys, don't want to marry them , but want to play with them.
Oh, some of them definitely want to marry us. I found a great one a really long time ago. There were a few others before her that definitely would’ve gone that route, but I was holding out for perfection.

Each to his own. The thought never even occurred to me. I followed more the ancient tradition of admiring what your dad does and emulating him (he was a dead serious jazz musician who would have dumped any woman in a second for a gig with Charlie Parker). Music was serious-as-a-heart-attack art in my family and was never remotely connected to getting chicks or popularity or money

We’ve all got to do things our own way. As I said in another post, I figured I could have both. So why shouldn’t I?

That’s awesome! Congratulations! I still have mine as well. We’ll be married 27 years in September. This summer will be 28 years we’ve been together.

I started playing metal for the love of the game, not to get any girls or whatever.

However, my lady is a huge metal head like myself and it's awesome to see. Deftones, Cannibal Corpse, Motionless in White, Avenged Sevenfold. Big into shoegaze too.

Not saying you shouldnt. Just saying that the world is full of musicians who never even considered getting laid as a reason to become a musician, yet the study bases its premise on that being an overriding reason. Im certain that people like Beethoven werent composing to get laid
