What are your favorite/most recent excuses to get another guitar?

How do you sell it to yourself?

My current excuse: it’s a single p90, I don’t have anything set up like that.

Always to get something I feel I'm missing. Last was that I didn't like the way my current acoustic electric emphasized the mids and lows and didn't have that high end sparkle.

Bought this about two months ago. I'm gonna sell my old one, but haven't got around to it yet:

New GAS is for an '80s Marshall solid state amp. I've convinced myself I need that Marshall tone and I don't get it with my Blackstar.

I’ve never needed an excuse to buy anything. If it’s something I wanted or needed and it wouldn’t have a negative effect on our lives I bought it.

There was an outdoor furniture set we both fell in love with. It would have fit nicely on our outer deck. The question was $3,000 for the furniture or replace three windows and get a lesser outdoor dining set? The answer was windows and dining set. No regrets. No excuses.

Usually that it is really cheap and availability is limited. For example, "This Monoprice Tele is only $60 but they only have a few of them in stock."

With parts to assemble a guitar, it's usually a slow acquisition process so that I can say, "I already have most of the parts for the build already."

I was married. No go. I had an electric and an acoustic. Divorced and moved in with my partner/best friend since 5th grade. He’s an artist so despite the twenty something I’ve accumulated, he’s always right there saying an artist needs tools so get some. Never ever a negative comment towards getting new gear…always encouragement.

The motivation for the last two instruments I bought was primarily based on price. Being able to buy something I knew I would enjoy and had considered previously at a 40% to 50% discount was too good to pass on. It didn't take long at all to pull the trigger on either purchase.

In the past the motivation has been more about filling a gap in my fleet of instruments that I wanted to fill but price/value was always a consideration then as well.

The last three I bought were all good decisions, I think. I’ve wanted a Tele for some time, the MIJ ‘52RI was a sweet treat! I’ve wanted a Godin made guitar, purely for patriotic reasons and the all solid woods Metropolis acoustic will be a guitar for life. Finally, I’ve always regretted selling a 12 string acoustic, years ago when I developed a neurological disease. My hands were struck hard and at one point, I believed I’d have to give up. I sold this sweet Art and Lutherie thinking I’d never be able to play it. I worked hard to ‘get my hands back’ so I could keep playing. I got my confidence back and bought a budget Martin 12 string that I adore playing.

I have observed this tactic on a few forums: "I don't have a blue color guitar -- I heard color changes guitar tone"... "I have five identical Strats except for color to match my outfits!"

The magical trick of tricks: have plenty of guitars, occasionally swap them around the house from storage to display units to active players, and then a new addition goes entirely unnoticed. It's an expensive solution to the problem of getting just one more ...

For the past several years, the only guitar I play in public is my acoustic Yamaha FG-160. I would like to be ready, in case the need arises, to plug into a PA system. So I need a Martin HD28e. Okay, maybe the least expensive acoustic-electric Martin that is not high-pressure laminate.
