I have enjoyed this board for a few years now, continue to learn a ton of great information, and really appreciate the very wide diversity of opinions and interests that get expressed here. We are all lucky to have something like this!:)

With that in mind, here is a question for those who have been around here for a while: has the amount of shaky advice been increasing? Or is it just me? By shaky advice, I mean misinformed, or the increasingly common tendency of people to recommend whatever thing they have and like, with apparently little or no thought to what the OP actually wants and might like.

Such as, this type of fairly typical thread:

    Original Post:
I am a novice player looking for advice on a low-priced amplifier to buy. It would be used mostly at home at low-volume so I won’t wake the baby, and once in a while out jamming with friends.

    Responses:
    - Dr. Z Carmen Ghia
    - Buy an amp? What’s wrong with you? Just build your own!
    - Vintage hand wired blackface pre-CBS Vibrosupermagnaverb with a Celestion Gold speaker and NOS tubes designed for the instrument panel in the cockpit of a Russian Yak-3.
    - Buy an amp? What’s wrong with you? Get a Line 6 Helix.
    - Twin Reverb. With an attenuator.

Does this kind of thing bother anyone else? Or am I just going a bit stir crazy?o_O

A lot of the responses you describe are attempts at humor...

After all, if you can't have fun around here, why bother hanging out ???

My standard answer for about any amp question is Twin Reverb.
That really is the best answer.
    Bedroom amp? Twin Reverb.
    Light gigging amp? Twin Reverb.
    Stadium gigging amp? Twin Reverb
    Takes pedals well? Twin Reverb.
    Better winter traction? Twin Reverb.
Low budget tube amp? Twin Reverb.

I tried to buy one o' those on eBay but just barely lost the auction. I ended up getting a Twin Reverb instead.

I think pretty much everyone is feeling the pinch right now.

The best we can do is to be patient and kind to others.

Unless they get mean; then ya bust 'em in the chops.

You really can't go wrong with an old Twin Reverb, or a Bassman. Unless you are frail and can't move it to your gig. :p

What tends to annoy me is the relentless widespread pushing of the latest gadget and the echo chamber that it creates, until the next latest gadget. Katana, Katana, Katana. Tone Master, Tone Master, Tone Master. How many of those threads have you seen here?

yes, asking for advice may get you types of advice that you were not seeking , and ....
I hesitate to advise because most of the advice that I would offer is not really for the other person it usually is self-referencing.

I, for one, am growing tired of this becoming more and more like The Gear Page, with the equivalent "holier than thou tone snobs" who insist that anything designed after the advent of color TV is inferior and unworthy of your attention, and if you don't agree with them you must be a moron, because they are the oracles of all things tone related.
And then, they blather on about the SS $300 pedals based on a 25 cent op amp, and a few resistors, caps, and diodes that gives their magic tube amps even more superior tone, not even seeing the irony there. But, they wouldn't be caught dead using a SS amp. It's so ignorant that it's laughable.

Observational meta threads like this tend to amplify the problem rather than resolve it.

yeah anytime I 've said twin reverb I meant it. But yes there does seem to be a bit of overkill suggestions -but I attribute it to most folks on here are good players and pretty knowledgeable, I think it helps to be here with some experience rather than being new and asking what small solid state amp I should buy. Its one of the reasons I like this forum as I feel like most folks know more than I do

Actually I had one back in the early '80s when I was 16 years old. It was my first "real" amp, and I got it used for a very reasonable price. It should be illegal for someone that age to own an amp like that. You should need a license or something. I'm pretty sure my use of it bordered on the criminal. Sold it a few years later for who knows what. I had no idea whatsoever what I had. Even back than as a skinny 120-lb weakling I carried that thing up and down stairs, everywhere. It did not occur to me that there might be a choice. Today the max weight I am willing to deal with is a Deluxe Reverb, which now serves as my "big" amp.

After ten yours of high-speed Internet enlightenment. The answer is simply, the most expensive, highest sensitivity rated speaker you can buy today.
Even better if you get an obscure older expensive high sensitivity speaker and send it off to a wizard high a tip a mountain for an expensive recone.
    Anything less is just unworthy.

If no Twin is available then it has to be a Magnatone 280. 20160824_173329.jpg all geared up and ready, in my house.
