I always tell them I don't give out my number and if they need one to stay in the good graces of the employer to just make one up... I had a cashier at Harbor Freight tell me once that I wouldn't have a warranty return for the tool I bought if they didn't have my number. I said "wrong, all I need is the recieipt your about to hand me for proof of purchase"... State law.

My smartphone number is on some kind of spam robot dialler.I’m in the UK. I get calls from all over the USA. Different numbers different states. 5 to 10 a day. There’s no one there. They all leave 30 to 40 seconds of silence on my voicemail. I permanently have my phone on silent. I block each number but next day there’s a fresh lot of new numbers calling me.

My first mobile phone was given to me by what was my then gf in 2002 and I kept the number.
I still get scammers phoning it asking for her by name to discuss the road accident she has just been in.

always give your name as 'wilson pickett' and your phone number as '6345789'.

in ireland last year, the health service database was hacked. within a few weeks EVERYBODY's number was being scammed, along the lines of 'this is the irish tax service. we are taking €1,000 from your bank account. if you want to speak to someone press 1' or similar.
i don't answer the phone to any number not in my contacts. if they're genuine they'll leave a message.

Guess what lady.. I have my own rewards system. It's called a JOB! I work, they reward me with money, I buy shoes. Pretty neat system indeed. Take your points and stuff em and stay out of my life and let me just buy a pair of shoes from your stupid store? Thaaaanks...
+1

If they really insist, just give them a fake phone number 😉

(Not to the OP, just a general response)
Just say no thanks, no need to get any panties in a twist.
I'm old, I'm grouchy...but I don't let BS bother me any more either.
I had an internet fight with peopl on a guitar forum, I said how people today are voluntarily giving away all their privacy...I was lambasted by everyone there. But I have certainly been proven correct, which I always knew I was.

They are instructed to ask for your number. You don’t have to give it out. It’s they’re job. No reason to be an ass to the clerk.

Sorry Gregorio’s looks like we were thinking the same thing at the same time.

I worked retail for 10 years. I know it can be a nightmare dealing with the public. I'm always polite until I'm pushed. If I'm met with some line about how they need it for points or any other crap, I'll then be curt, but never rude or mean. I know it's the stupid companies pushing their cashiers to ask.

Don't worry, they know where you go.

I was having a phone conversation with my sister and the next time I watched you tube, I got an ad for what we were talking about.

It needs to stop if we don't want to end up on a social credit score system.
At the risk of going all tin-foil-hat here...
It's already too late. Big Data knows, it won't stop and it's only going to get worse.

Now, what you can do if you still want to join the resistance is this:
