Since I'm kind'a getting into the JBL thing I'd like to try some EVs but I don't know a dammed thing about them. So what models should I be looking for ? And are the ones in old PA cabs the same as what you'd put in an amp?
Size wise 10" 12" or 15" whatever I can find I ain't fussy.
Thanks.

The best Electrovoice speakers to use for guitar applications are
EVM 12L or EVM 15L......these are highest power handling capability and extremely clear and relatively uncolored sound. Strong, tight bass in particular, but due to the huge magnets and cast frame construction, they're HEAVY. Not muddy at all. The 250-watt handling EVM 15L is the standout.

Electrovoice also created a line of 10, 12, 15-inch speakers made expressly for guitar applications called the Force series. All of the Force 10, 12, 15 speakers used the same voice coil and magnet assembly I believe. Rated 150-watts, still had a robust cast frame. Great speakers, but I prefer the 15L. I have owned or played extensively, the 12L, 15L, Force 10 and Force 15.

WOOFER MODEL

EVM-10DLX

Specifications

Nominal Basket Diameter

10"

Impedance

8 ohms

Power Rating (EIA RS-426A)

300 Watts

Frequency Response

100Hz - 2khz

Sensitivity (1W/1m)

97dB

Voice Coil Diameter

2.5" / 63.5mm
Magnet Weight 2.2 kg. / 4.9 lbs.

I have two of these in a cab and I wonder about the rating on the frequency response these are mid bass speakers but they are plenty bright and are rated at 100 to 2K yet many guitar speakers are rated to 5 K These are bright enough with my PA 100 head so I think the rating could be misleading.

That is what I pulled them out of Bobby a three way PA cab the the mid range was these Tens instead of a horn. But I do not think they were stock they came out of a St Louis Music cab that had Black Widows for the 15's and the EV for the Tens and those square horns for the highs. Horns were blown as one Black Widow so I figured heck with it I would part them out besides the cabs were way too big for what I wanted but I only paid 60 bucks for the pair. Got the two good EV's and the BW that was good I put into a small bass cab.

I have a force 12 on the bench right now and a 12L in a DR2. Seem to be identical except for magnet size. Both sound great. If you are interested in the force let me know, I've been meaning to put it on CL.

I read my previous posting above and realize that I probably need to clarify that the voice coil and magnet assembly on the 12L and 15L series are even more robust than the Force series. Consequently, the 12L & 15L are higher power handling (about 250-watts compared to 150-watts). I think that the tone of the 12L and 15L are slightly better, in my opinion....but all are really fine speakers. Their quality is evident in the construction.

Another great line of speakers are the 15-inch 100-watt Altec Lansing 418B Alnico and the Altec Lansing 421A Ceramic. These are also both high power handling and even wider extended frequency range. Hard to find. This series had a construction called "Dia-Cone", which was a concentric aluminum domed whizzer assembly, that helped to extend the high end frequency response.

I currently use a Altec Lansing 421A in a 15-inch cabinet (closed back Thiele ported type). It slightly edged out a Force 15 in that cabinet. I have not compared it to a EVM 15L though. Eric Johnson is a big fan of Altec Lansing 418B's I think.

I think the EVM 12S series were the best 12" guitar speaker. The cone is shallower, and there is a more mid presence than the EVM 12L. I have a 2 12 cabinet I built with them. They can also be found in some of the EV floor monitor cabinets. Power handling is the same as the EVM 12L.

I have a Force 10 in my 1982 Superchamp and a Force 12 in my Blues Jr.
The EV speakers are much louder and cleaner than the originals in these amps. They let the amp's true tone come through uncolored.
I believe that Cesar Diaz modded all of Stevie Ray Vaughan's amps with EV's.
They expensive, but worth every cent IMHO.

Thanks for all the info guys. It sounds like I could get lucky and find some in an old PA cab. Or get some more Radio Shack Utahs that need a recone like the last two cabs I drug home.

I have a pair of EV 12" SROs in a Rivera 2X12 cab. I also have JBL D120s and Altec 417s. I prefer the SROs, the Altecs come in 2nd and the D120s are third; when used for guitar. I have a pair of Stephens 12" full-range speakers that I love for HI-FI, but I have read suggestions to use them for guitar (probably to low in power handling to use for guitar.

EVO SRO (coffee can) the king of Alnicos

X2 on the SRO's I have a 15" that is amazing.

On a side note, Eminence makes the Delta Pro which is said to be an EV clone. I have a pair in a 2x12 that sound great. But if your looking for Speaker breakup look elsewhere.
