Why are Esquires so expensive? They are simpler than a standard Telecaster yet cost more. Is it supply and demand. Basically they are hard to find and the demand is larger than the supply. I don’t know the answer just looking for thoughts.

Good question. I actually prefer One pickup guitars. Why do some Esquire models have a pickup selector?

It's an easy enough mod to change a regular tele to an Esquire if you know how to solder and have a few tools. I too wish they weren't so hard to find. I finally learned to solder and built one myself. I wasn't nuts over it, but I think a better neck and pickup would have made the difference, so I'll try again one day.

INstead of choosing between pickups, they can be used to select between different wiring schemes. A have an old Squier Tele and turning into an Esquire, and the 3-way switch is going to choose between 1) direct-to-jack, 2) "normal" volume and tone and 3) an Eldred circuit, which (with the capacitor value I chose) is supposed to give a tone kind of like the beginning of "I Walk the Line".

The original wiring is a PITA.

One pickup, one volume, one tone. Any more than that (in an Esquire) is a waste of parts.

Switch your 3 way switch to the bridge position.

Dimarzio Super Distortion humbucker, Mojo Vintage Taper volume pot, Switchcraft output jack.

    It rocks.

Real Esquires are rare, take 1966 as an example they made 4228 teles, 116 esquires and 5 esquire customs.

    Perhaps so...

I have 50s Classic mim Esquire and still have 2 clones I built. All 3 have the 3 way switch but different circuitry and all positions are useful to me.

That would make it supply and demand. You can’t find a new one and there are so few used ones that demand far exceeds supply.

I like my esquires. I have three of them .
They all have straight to jack/ vol and tone- fixed cap with volume
I have different caps in each. One is. .0033 one is a .0068 the other I am not sure.
I also may have too many or not enough zeros there.

I bet if you removed the pickguard you'd see a neck pickup routing hole.

Some people say the neck pickup magnetism causes the string to pull downwards, and if you remove it, you get a better sound. I dunno. I like to have a neck pickup sound. Esquires do look cool, in the same way a LP junior looks cool. With just one pickup it seems more like you ain't gonna mess around.

Real Esquires are the ultimate guitars. Their simplicity requires a good guitarist...

I have a couple of esquire clones, 1 with traditional 3 way wiring, 1 with a 4 way. I love both of them.

I'm of the opinion that any guitar needs a good guitarist if he plans on performing in front of people.

It is easy enough to change a regular Tele to an Esquire. If you are handy with an iron & can do so. That & a new pick guard (or not) is all that is required. Or, buy a pre assembled control plate to make it even more easier.
