NGD... I spent about an hour and a half playing it last night both acoustically and though an amp and WOW, I like it! The MIM Fender '51 Fat U neck is quickly growing on me.

Swee! Great color combo. Let us know what you think of the pickup. I'm thinking about putting something different in my Esquire.

What did you choose for the four switch positions? If I were building an Esquire, I'd probably do a 4-way and have the first two positions traditional, followed by the "Eldred cocked wah" and traditional dark positions.

That looks great and I know how good those '51 Fat U necks are (avatar guitar ;) ).

I don’t want to hijack this thread but you all might be able to answer a question I’ve long had: Why do Esquires have pickguards? They always look like Teles missing something. I think they’re great guitars; they just look weird to me with that huge pickguard.

'Cause this is what they look like without a pickguard:

Also, it's in the name - to guard against picks.

Thanks. I guess they must all be Telecaster bodies with a pickup left off. I’d think that the parts-squire world at least, if not Fender, would have bodies without unnecessary routs for unneeded pickups and wiring.

I got into this in part because I’ve been getting into transparent pickguards since seeing one on a Tele build on TDPRI.

    Thanks again!

That's it, they had one pile of bodies.

Fender used to sell a neck pickup upgrade kit for the Esquire, they couldn't have done that if the hole wasn't already there.

BTW, I prefer the way an Esquire looks with the full pickguard and no neck pickup.

#1 is straight to the amp. (no volume or tone control) #2 is Volume control only. #3 has both tone and volume control. #4 has volume control with Eldred cocked wah cap.

Pickguards are over rated unless you have a big hole you need to cover. Esquires always look fine with a PG... Oh nice job by the way...

423 people, including me, would really like to see that wiring diagram. It sounds like what 423 of us would want to try.

So, if you see a Tele that looks like it's missing something, it's very likely an Esquire!;-)

And to throw a curve ball.... The new Squier Esquires (Esquires, for short? Lol) do NOT have a neck pickup rout and it is solid under the pickguard.

This can also be achieved using a 3-way switch and a no-load pot for the tone control.

Billie Gibbons has an Esquire with no guard and a roach in the wiring route.

Nice job. I used that same pickup in this Esquire parts build. 9EB896B1-FE6C-4F12-8914-49AD3D243FA1.jpeg
