Very simple - just a volume and no-load tone control with .022 tone cap - no switch at all

A real nice range of good useable tone ;)

DiMarzio Pre B-1. A bit fatter and darker than a regular Tele pickup, P-90ish, ballast but cleans up when you back off the volume, perfect for rock, perfect for an Esquire.
Another vote for the Pre-B1. Fat and P90-ish. Should be just what you're looking for. If you decide to go with this pickup lmk, I have one in need of a home. :)

There are a million pickups out there. I stick to Rio Grande, Seymour Duncan, Fender and Lace because I am familiar with them, but I'd also go with any known brand that is a good deal.

There are a lot of good choices out there. However, one of my favorites in an Esquire is a Fender Custom Shop Texas Tele bridge pickup. Just enough amount of punch yet will still "twang".
