Saw this guy playing with the funky Meters this past Saturday and really liked his playing. I'm a big fM fan and have seen Brain Stoltz with them mostly, and while I think he's a great player, he could get a little too shreddy for me. Last year Ian Neville sat in on a few tunes and I was underwhelmed.
Eric was old school cool and stayed in the pocket. Great tone (Ibanez 335, Mesa Dual Retcifier).

I had heard the live Soulive CD ("Soulive") years ago but wasn't really all that impressed, can anyone recommend a few recordings?

I saw Soulive at the Stax 50th Celebration Concert in Memphis last year, The band was debuting their first release on the freshly revived Stax label-- almost sounded like the group Living Colour. I prefer their older Booker T/Meters-inspired B-3 instrumentals such as on their early albums.

Go to http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:ajfixqujldse~T2 to hear samples from almost all their releases. I recommend starting at the beginning and working forward to discover where on their musical evolution your tastes fit in. Hope this helps.

Yeah, maybe I did'nt give that live CD enough of a chance.
The show I saw was recorded the show but I don't see it available yet, hopefully the boys agreed to it.

I can never add much of value when soloing over those Meters grooves, I'd like to cop a few of Krasno's ideas.

Living Colour is the last thing I'd compare their latest CD to. It really has the old school grooves with the addition of soulful vocals.

I used to dig the Evans Brothers when they played with Peter Prince in Moon Boot Lover in the early 90's.

Certainly didn't mean the Living Colour reference as a slam or an indication of their latest release. However, they played at an after-party for the Stax shindig and they rocked out in a grungy, distorted Living Colour style-- decidedly NOT in a Funky Meters sort of way the original poster was digging at the gig he saw.

I remember the album based on Rubber Soul - "Rubber Soulive" was fun ... will have to revisit that one today, thanks for the reminder!

I like Soulive - Soulive.
Really, any of their early 2000s material is pretty similar. If you want a more lavish production then the later 2000s material is it.
