I commented about this on someone else’s thread recently, but I thought I’d create a new post for it.

Picked up a used Epiphone Les Paul Special TV Yellow with P90s recently. Wow, this guitar is really good. And cheap! I had been toying with the idea of finding a used Gibson LP Special (at 3-4x the cost), but I am totally satisfied with the Epi. The neck is a pretty fat C, which I had no experience with but is surprisingly comfortable. Frets are great (they're supposed to be medium-jumbo but they seem smaller to me. Maybe that's because the neck is so fat.) Pickups sound really good – I think these are the same ones that come in the Epiphone ES339 P90 Pro, which people universally like. This seems a little thinner and lighter than a typical Les Paul. I have not weighed it but I’m guessing may be around 8.5 lbs. Overall for $400 it’s a no brainer. I got it as something cheap to bang around with, and to fill a P90 void. But honestly at the moment I’m liking this as much as anything else I own.

I picked this one because the previous owner made some really good mods, including Tusq nut, upgraded bridge, and new pots, wiring, and jack. In fact, I think this is the first time I ever got a guitar – new or used – that arrived with a perfectly cut and fitted nut. Big relief.

It seems generally accepted knowledge that when you mod a guitar you never get that value back when you sell it. In fact, the guitar may be worth less even with upgrades, since many buyers are wary, and prefer to get something all original. But for a buyer, that is a good opportunity. I feel like the guitar I got is better than new, with well-done mods that will save me the time and money of doing them myself.

Anyway, if you have a chance to check out this guitar, do it. $449 new!

Glad you went for it! I’m loving my mine. It’s all I’ve been playing lately. I was thinking about a tortoise shell guard… looks great! It really is a nice sounding and playing guitar. Yeah, the TV yellow has nothing transparent about it. I knew that going in. Don’t care. It makes up for it in other ways.

Beautiful, congrats!

There's something about this that's so TV yellow, it's like how much more TV yellow could this be? And the answer is none. None more TV yellow.

The necks mimics the Gibson model. The Gibson is a baseball bat. If you like those, it's the neck for you.

I've grown to like the thinner, flatter, lighter LP special style. Add in Epiphone's P90's and you can have a lot of fun.

I never thought of myself as a Les Paul type. They just never sat right for me, but I played a used one of these on a whim and found it irresistible. It is absolutely the most fun electric guitar I have. Very highly recommended to those that are curious.

There’s one at the local guitar emporium. It’s been there for months now so I guess no one’s interested. I’d seriously consider it, but I already have my Gibson SG Special. I think they’re quite attractive.

I'm glad I'm out of the market. With those specs and the reviews from members that guitar at that price is a true steal.

I got one right when they came out, 2019. They were priced less then, and MF gave me the full 20% off. Great deal on a good guitar.

I liked it, and the P90s sounded great for the price. Frets were horrible on it, though. I worked on it several times to get them level, but I'm no pro. I could never get it set up nice. Then the neck pickup went in and out. I never got around to fixing it, as I got other guitars I liked better in the meantime. I recently took it to GC for cash. They offered more on it then for my old MIM tele. I was surprised given the price differences between them in their used postings. I kept the tele cuz it's a better guitar and it has sentimental value.

So if anyone is looking for a used lp special at any GC and you come across one, make sure the neck pickup works LOL.

I LOVE the look and features of this guitar!

( in 2020 I bought a 2018 Epi SG Pro- absolutely dig it, THEN saw the LP Special and thought, " This one is next!" - just not yet...)

But I kind of wish Epiphone did one in Cherry Mahogany, White, maybe Tobacco Sunburst?
It's a beautiful design, IMO

I got one for my son a couple years ago. It's a good guitar, for sure. Watch out for those little grub screws on the tailpiece. One of them fell out of my son's guitar. I'd suggest removing them, wrapping with teflon plumber's tape, and reinstalling.
