Hi everyone, I'm a new member and I hope you can help me with a question. I work in Dubai but will be home (VA) for the summer and I was thinking about bringing a beater guitar back to Dubai with me to leave at work (I am a teacher who helps out with choir club and school plays/concerts). I am looking at the Epi LP spl I with p90s since it's on sale cheap but I wonder about the neck profile.

Maybe it's my age but I find that thinner necks cause my hand to fatigue quickly. I used to have a 62AVRI tele that I really liked. As I remember it, I liked the neck but would have been OK with it being thicker. I now have two PRS SE guitars: an SE One and a semi-hollow with p90s. The SE One has a fairly fat neck and it feels pretty good. I wouldn't mind if it was thicker. The semi-hollow is very slightly thinner.

How would you describe the Epi spl I neck? I suspect it may be too thin for me. I read lots of reviews but couldn't really find any specifics. Would an SX or Squier tele be a better option for a beater? I did briefly pick up a Classic Vibe tele in one of the shops here and the neck was too thin for me.

Thanks for reading!

I would say it's average but leaning to the thin side. It's not as thick as the dot studio I had. It has a pretty wide fingerboard though making it harder to chord with your thumb. Overall mine plays well but I took the first one back due to neck crack in back thanks to advice from this forum.

It's on the thin side. I'd say it's close to a fender modern C. Not the thinnest neck I have but nowhere close to thick

I'm here to vouch for the SX vintage strat. Got it as a trowaway for 100$, my conclusions are here:

However, I never did ditch it because it plays so good. (way above it's pay grade) Neck has 12" radius (or 13 something) and is on the fat side. I would easily consider it the best beater/throwaway available. (even though it's a keeper)

For fat neck LP, look no further than the Epi Trad Pro, but that costs more and you won't want to throw it away ever...

if you want to spend a little more the Epi 56 LP has a fat neck and some nice sounding P90s.. Wild Kat Royale was on sale earlier for less than $30.. that neck is on the chunky side.

The Squier Bullet Strat is thinnest.
The Squier '51 is similar but feels thicker.
Squier CV is thin but feels wider.
The Epiphone LP Special I and II are medium by comparison. Wider too.
The Rondo SX Furians are thicker.

I just measured the models I currently own. I used calipers and measured the thickness of the neck at the dot on the 9th fret. The Epi Special I and II are identical at 23 mm (nominal) and the Squier Bullet Strat 2H sparkle (GC exclusive 2014 model blowing out at $99. Bought two on Friday; red sparkle and blue sparkle) comes in at approximately 21 mm. It feels like more of a difference than the measurement reveals.

I've sold off and/or given away my CV, SXs and '51s. I'm always tinkering and/or refinishing budget guitars, especially $100 and under guitars. I sparkled an Epi Special I recently. That's a nice player. Good choice. I'm planning on swirling a budget guitar one of these days. I have my eye out for a strat body. I was looking for just such a guitar when I walked into the $99.00 Sparkle Bullets.

As a point of reference: Thickest, in guitars from recent years that I'm familiar with, albeit in a more expensive category, is the MIM Cabronita. That would qualify as "baseball bat" when compared to the previously mentioned bargain guitar profiles.
