AKA "auto wah". I've got a Boss Auto Wah. It's fine for the limited purposes for which I've been using it. But it's a little bit noisy.

I'll be doing some recording in the near future, and I'd like to have a pedal that that doesn't have the background noise.

The Mu-Tron III is I believe still the gold standard for this kind of pedal, but they're ridiculously expensive if you can find one.

What's your favorite currently produced envelope follower and why? Thanks in advance.

You can't go wrong with the Maxon AF 9. The new version has knobs rather than sliders. It's dead quiet.

There's a Keeley Neutrino (based on the Mu-Tron) on Reverb now for $60.

I have a V1 and it sounds good to me. At that price, get it.

Death By Audio's Deep Animation is a unique take on the effect with more options (I prefer it over the Keeley), but is kind of expensive.

An envelope follower does not have to preceed a filter. I have a delay with the chip clocked to an envelope follower, which causes the echo to pitch dive more or less (or remain stable) depending how hard I pick. That is my favorite pedal with an envelope follower (Sketchy Sounds Lost Soul).

My favorite envelope filter is the DOD 440 reissue. I think. I also have a 90s FX-25B that adds a blend control. It's better for flying saucer sounds, but the 440 is a little bigger, bubblier tone.

Thanks. Got it. I've always like Keeley pedals but never bought one. At less than half the price of new it's a good bet.

I have an envelope filter because I do a lot of Dead gigs. Or I did. They seem to have slowed down now, but I still love the effect, used sparingly. I got a DOD 440 reissue a few years ago when Sweetwater had them on a 50% off sale. I love it. Super easy to use, and all the sounds are there. I’ve only used it live, but I have used it extensively and haven’t noticed any noise issues. I’m a fan. It certainly does what it’s supposed to.

The LovePedal Rubber Chicken is a great Envelope Filter that has a large sweet spot and sound great.

Compared to many other pedals, just about every combination of settings work ... and they work all over the neck.

Late post, sorry about that. If you can get past all the menus and options, the Zoom G1 Four multi-effect box has a really good-sounding envelope follower. And a zillion other effects - its "Big Muff" sounds particularly good. Better for recording than for live playing. I bought mine used for 40 bucks.

I have an old Ibanez cousin of the current Maxon...supposedly all the Ibanez/Maxon units' circuits are very close to the original Mu-Tron.
