...and I don't even have my neck yet.

Decided to try a Gibson-style 24.75" conversion neck on a Telecaster. Did my usual obsessing for far too long in terms of minutes/hours spent going over the options available from the major neck/body guys - Warmoth, USACG, Guitar Mill and even Musikraft.

Musikraft got eliminated quite early as bad reviews on their necks are way too easy to find.

Would have given Guitar Mill a shot, but they never responded to my inquiry. Maybe they don't make 24.75" necks.

In the end, it came down to Warmoth and USACG. I've played Warmoth necks before and liked them. I don't know that I've ever seen or played a USACG neck, but they get glowing reviews here and everywhere else, so...

Factors in Warmoth's favor were that their "'59 roundback" profile looked attractive. And their advertised/stated price was lower.

But, they've over-engineered (charitably speaking) their fragile truss-rod arrangement. (Seriously. Come on.) They don't do 6150 SS frets, they charge $35 (?!?) extra for a straight 12" radius, won't do a one-piece maple in 24.75, and in the end, it turned out that the "'59 Roundback" profile isn't available on conversion necks either.

Took one more shot at it, figuring that I'd take a 1" "Fatback" and shave it down myself. I was informed that doing do would "void any warranty."

Fair enough.

Was holding off on calling USACG, mainly because of price. The neck I wanted wasn't that much more, but I'm always happy to save a buck. Even then, it became clear over the course of my countless hours of analysis that much of the reason for this is that USACG front-loads the cost of custom work into the price of a neck, where Warmoth nickels-and-dimes you to death with charges for anything out of the ordinary.

So I called USACG. An hour ago. Tommy just called me back 10 minutes ago... wanted to suggest a change - they're already working on my neck. Wood is picked, holes are drilled, etc. It will be here soon.

As I sit here typing this, they're making my neck. Exactly as I wanted. For less than I thought. And for quite a bit less than Warmoth would have (theoretically) charged me for the neck they refused to make.

If you're on the fence regarding USACG vs. Warmoth, I can't tell you what to do, but I wasted far too much time this time - I won't give it a second's thought next time.

USACG it is for me, for everything, from now on.

Yeah, USACG is great. I placed my first order with them just recently and Tommy was a pleasure to work with. Their customer service is top notch, and the body I received is beautiful!

Another happy USACG customer. Tommy is a great guy to deal with. My two best guitars both have his bodies. The last one I bought was ordered and shipped in less than a week. I can't say enough good things about his customer service.

I've had too many "can't do it" responses from Warmoth. Sometimes Warmoth's upcharges do bring the cost of a neck up to the price of USACG, sometimes not. Doesn't matter to me because I know I'm buying from someone who really cares that I'm happy with what I'm buying and they've made the best necks I've ever played. They ghost build some high-end brands too.

I called Tommy at USACG as well.

I need to crunch some numbers, but it's very likely they'll be getting my business as well.

I tried running and I tried hiding, but in the end Chris has hit it dead on. USA Custom Guitar is your answer.

We want our necks to be a certain way, that's the whole idea of a homebrew. But Warmoth simply can't make course corrections and before you know it, it isn't your neck or your money. It is their neck. It isn't your money any more. They decide. You either accept their strictures or you do not. Warmoth can be polite and often is polite, as long as you take what they give.

USACG is THE BEST! I was totally stoked when I received my neck. I asked for a very dark and straight grained rosewood fretboard and when I unpacked it it was exactly the neck I had in mind when I placed my order. Tommy is a great guy, too...called him from Germany before ordering and talked guitars for over half an hour!

USACG has outstanding customer service and has every right to charge the prices they do IMO. just outstanding service, outstanding quality, just awesome all around. when it comes to making a partscaster, the neck is IMO the most important part of the guitar, and you really cant cut any corners when buying one. USACG is the way to go.

Yep. I bought a bone blank from StewMac. I believe it had a curved bottom (that was over 5 years ago).

What do you guys do about installing a nut on a USACG neck?

I specify the flat slot; I think that is the "default" choice anyway.

I just use a 1 + 11/16ths precut Tusq or Graphtech nut, available from Stewart MacDonald or you local Allparts dealer. It has a tab on the bottom you cut or grind off IF you specify a curved nut slot.

Wish I'd asked for a curved nut slot for my USACG 12 String neck ( maple/ebony board ) because all the longer ( 1 + 3/4ths plus ) nut blanks in the right sizes are curved only. No tab.

Why not cut one out of a chunk of Corian countertop? Do you have a table saw or some means of getting parallel sides?

So as to stay on-topic, yay, USACG!

Being a kitchen installer !! is this a viable alternative as I infrequently have to install this over-rated product

Well, it's an alternative to buying "Corian" nuts at retail, yes. Martin uses Corian on many of their multi-thousand-dollar acoustics.

Look - you're in business!

An Australian in Singapore.
I've had numerous run-ins with Warmoth.
Some of it was my fault (I was late paying for something due to moving continent), some of it was there's (staff member took an order down wrong, denied it, Warmoth backed up their staff and basically told me to sod off) so we've decided that we won't be doing business again.

USACG have a great rep. I'll be going with them next time for sure.
